Biography

Manie was born in 1877^[1], probably on 24 Oct 1877^[2], in Tennessee^[3][4], probably in Bumpus Mills, Stewart County, Tennessee.  Manie was the first child of Desmond Hargis and Mary (Shelton) Hargis^[3].

Manie was married on 24 Aug 1893 to Willie Buckner Pugh, known as "Willie", in Stewart County, Tennessee^[5].  The couple had six children of which three whom lived to adulthood^[4][6] :

James Edward Pugh (b. 1897)^[4][6][2]

Sally Mae (Pugh) Acree (b. 1899)^[4][6][2]

Mary Lillian (Pugh) Roberts (b. 1901)^[6][2]

Manie passed away in 1902^[1], probably on 15 Sep 1902^[2].  Burial was in Green Hill Cemetery, Bumpus Mills, Stewart County, Tennessee^[1].  The three children were raised by W. B.'s second wife.

Research Note

1. Manie's first name is written four times on the original of the county marriage record^[5].  One of these looks like "Minnie", two look like "Mannie" and the fourth is hard to tell.  "Manie" sounds like it could be a nickname but no evidence of a more formal name was found.

6. ↑ ^{6.0 6.1 6.2 6.3 6.4} Attached to the FindAGrave memorial for Manie's husband, William B. Pugh, is a scan of a newspaper obituary for W. B. Pugh.  Date and name of newspaper not given.  The part of this relevant to Manie reads "Mr. Pugh, a lifelong resident of Bumpus Mills, ... married forty-three years ago to Miss Manie Hargis who died ten years later.  He later married Miss Lulu Johnson.  She survives along with two daughters and one son born to the first union.  They are Mrs. Billie Roberts of Bumpus Mills, Mrs. Gray Acree of Clarksville, Edward Pugh of Bumpus Mills.  He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Bettie Bumpus of Illinois."
