Biography

Christine Hargrave was born c.1777 in a French settlement of the then-Spanish colony of Louisiana. Her parents were Benjamin Hargrave and Rebecca Gwaltney, originally from British colonial Virginia and North Carolina.

In 1798 Christine married Charles Hanks, originally from Virginia and an uncle of Nancy Hanks Lincoln, in St. Martin de Tours Catholic Church, St. Martinville, Louisiana.[1] Fourteen children were born to the marriage.

In 1800 she and Charles were raising cattle and a family in St Martin, Louisiana Territory.[2]

In 1810 they were counted on the census in the Orleans District of the Louisiana Territory, United States, with six children.[3] By 1820 their location was designated as St Martin Parish, Louisiana, and their family was still growing.[4]

By 1830, when they were counted in River Manteau, St Landry Parish, Christine was a widow.[5]

In 1840 the family was still in the Opelousas area of St Landry Parish. It seems from the record that her son Nathaniel was the census informant.[6]

From the census we know that Christine was widowed by 1830, and that her last two children, Ralph and Meliciare Ann, were born c.1827. Charles is referred to as 'Deceased' in the record of their son Benjamin's marriage on "August 12, 1824," but the date has to be a transcription error, as Benjamin and his bride were still children in 1824. (The marriage likely occurred in 1834.) It is unknown whether the family moved from St Martin Parish to St. Landry Parish before her husband's death, or because of it.

Christine Hargrave Hanks died after 1840 and probably before 1850, but the exact date and location as yet are unknown. She may have been buried in Lafayette, Louisiana in 1867, but no source has been given for that information.[citation needed]
