Biography

Notables Project
John Harington is Notable.

John was born in about 1589 to parents John Harington and Mary Rogers.

In 1598 he received a bequest from his grandmother Lady Joan Rogers and was named as her godson, son of John. [1]

Like many other gentleman of his class and time he was well educated. He matriculated from Trinity College, Oxford on 7 Dec 1604, at age 15 (b. c. 1589). He then went to Cambridge (England) and was incorporated there in 1607. He was admitted to Lincoln's Inn,London on 30 April 1608 where he received legal training. He was made a Barrister-at-law in 1615. [2]

In about 1623 he married Lady Dyonis Ley daughter of James Ley, 1st Earl of Marlborough. [3]

In 1634, on the death of his mother, he received a bequest in her will. [4]

The years of the Civil War were busy for John. In 1645 he was elected MP for Somerset to the Long Parliament. In April of 1646 his election was declared void and so he was reelected in July 1646. In 1648 Cromwell's New Model Army entered the Parliament and forcibly removed those MPs who were not seen to be supporters of the Parliamentarian movements. John was secluded as part of this event which became known as Pride's Purge.

John wrote a will dated 21 April 1654 describing himself as "of Kelston". In it, he named his eldest son John, his son William and his daughter Phoebe as legatees. He also made his wife executrix of the will but he didn't name her. Fortunately she is named in the probate as Dionys. [5] His will was probated on 6 July 1657.

There is a generational memorial stone at St. Nicholas Churchyard, Kelston, Somerset, England, which states he died in 1654.[6]

Mistaken information

Some American family historians insist John Harrington was the father of Robert Harrington (of Watertown) and was the one who drowned in 1630. English historian Ian Grimble (‘The Harington Family’ – Jonathan Cape – London) clearly shows that Sir John Harrington of Kelston’s eldest son John married the daughter of the Ist Earl of Marlborough and they both remained in England.

John did not sail 1630 to Massachusetts on the "Prosperous" with alleged children Rebecca, Benjamin, Abraham, Robert and alleged wife Anne[7] "Benjamin Harrington's origin is unknown. The parents of Abraham and Rebecca) were not John and Anne Clinton but William and Anne (Liddell)[8]

Everything in the bio is "good" or marked mistaken. In my brief research on this John I didn't find his wife, but some notes that he wasn't married to Anne Clinton (which was trying to make him fit the widow Anne Errington in Cambridge, Massachusetts. I'm sure he has children that do not belong either for instance Abraham and Rebecca.

Harrington-233 and Harington-50 appear to represent the same person because: This is merge #3. There is alot to straighten out, but i believe all four are the same person. There is some repetition in the names of the wives, also. I didn't try to correct that.

Harrington-259 and Harington-50 are not ready to be merged because: There is a great deal of debate about the spelling of John's last name, and his place of birth. These issues should be resolved before merging in order to go in the right direction, r to rr, or rr to r.
