Biography

Mabel Harlakenden was a daughter of Richard Harlakenden, Esq., of Staple Inn, London and Earls Colne, Essex, and Margaret Huberd.[1][2][3][4] She was baptized on 27 December 1614[3] at Earls Colne, Essex.[2][4]

Mabel was mentioned in the 1631 will of her father, Richard Harlakenden. She emigrated to New England with her brother Roger in 1635[3] aboard the Defense, at age 21.[4][5][6]

Mabel married first John Haynes,[3] Esq., of Old Holt, Essex, Cambridge, Massachusetts and Hartford, Connecticut,[1] about 1636.[2][5] Mabel was John's second wife, his first wife, Mary Thornton[2][4] was buried at Hingham, Norfolk on 18 June 1627.[2] John was the son and heir of John Haynes, Esq. and Mary Mitchell and arrived in America in 1633,[4] aboard the Griffin, first settling at Cambridge, Massachusetts, and becoming the Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1635.[2]

Mabel and John had three sons and two daughters:

  • John,[2] born about 1638, returned to England where he married and had issue[4]
  • Roger,[2] born about 1640, returned to England and died soon after, perhaps on the voyage[4]
  • Rev. Joseph,[2] born 1642, married Sarah Lord by 1669[4]
  • Ruth, wife of Samuel Willis;[2] she was born about 1636 and married before March 1653/4[4]
  • Mabel, wife of James Russell[2] of Charlestown by 1665, Mabel was born in Hartford 19 March 1645/6[4]

The Haynes family removed to Hartford, Connecticut in 1637, and John was elected the first Governor of Connecticut in April 1639. He re-elected to serve a Governor in 1641, 1643, 1645, 1647, 1649, 1651 and 1653 and, when he was not Governor, he served in other positions in the Connecticut Colony government.[2] John Haynes died in Hartford, Connecticut before 9 January 1653/4,[2] when letters to John Winthrop Jr. described John Haynes recent death. A tombstone erected at Hartford gives an erroneous date of death of 1 March 1653/4.[4]

Mabel married second Samuel Eaton[1] at New Haven, Connecticut, on 17 November 1654.[2][4][5][7]

The following year, she and her second husband were among a large number who succumbed to an epidemic of smallpox.[4] Mabel died at the beginning of July 1655.[2]

Research Notes

The will of John Haynes mentions "wife Mabell; John eldest son by wife Mabell; Roger, second son; Joseph, youngest son; my Sonn, M' Nathaniel Eldred; daughters Ruth and Mabel".[8]
