Mary was born about 1847. She is the daughter of William Harman and Harriet Browninig. She is listed as Polly with her parents on the 1850 Census in Jeffersonville, Tazewell County, Virginia.[1] She is also listed with her parents on the 1860 Census as Polly Ann[2] in Logan, Virginia (which would soon become West Virginia).
It is believed (no source has been found at this time) that she married Levi Vance Jr. in about 1865-1866. She is listed in the home of Levi Sr and Mary Vance on the 1870 Census as Polly Harman Vance[3] in the Tridelphia District of Logan County, West Virginia.
