Biography

Birdie Bell Harmon was born 10 August 1902. She was the daughter of George and Sarah Harmon.

Birdie and her sister Rose were close during childhood and remained very close thru their lives.

Birdie often hosted family dinners, like Easter or Christmas Day, Rose was always in attendance. Rose would bring homemade candy. My favorite was what she called "Colored Dainties", she gave me the recipe, I still make them for my family at Christmas.

Birdie married Benjamin James Shipp in 1921. In October of the same year, Birdie came home from the doctor with the news that she was expecting their first child. She waited on her husband to return from work to tell him the good news. Instead she was contacted by the authorities to inform her that he had fallen into the ship's paddle wheel and was dead.

Birdie was a very strong woman. She named their son, Ben Allen Shipp and raised him on her own thru the depression. She told me she chose to remain widowed until she knew Ben was able to take care of himself.

Ben was married in 1941. Birdie married longtime friend and suitor Percy D Rogers about 1942. Birdie and Pete were a very happy couple and lived out their lives together.

I remember visiting them every summer when I was a child. It was always fun to help Grandma Birdie with the laundry. She had an old wringer washer and hung the laundry outside to dry.

My funniest memory I have of my grandparents is of the summer day my family pulled up to see Grandpa and Grandma both on the roof. They were both in their late 70's and should not have been on the roof. Grandpa said it was ok, grandma could not fall, he tied her to the chimney with a rope long enough to reach most of the roof but too short to reach the edge.

Needless to say, they were very active seniors, they gardened at least an acre every year, grandma made jelly and canned all she grew.

Pete passed away in 1986. After he was gone Birdie did not slow down, she said staying active was keeping her young. She passed away in 1994 after falling down the back stairs.
