Biography

On his wife's gravestone, his name is spelled Anan.

Research Notes

The Harmon family was well established in Suffield, Hartford County, CT, and several family members moved to New Marlborough, Berkshire County, MA, in 1745. Anan’s birth is listed in New Marlborough vital records, but he cannot have been born there because the first resident of New Marlborough, Benjamin Wheeler, had just arrived in 1739 (well documented in Berkshire County histories) and it was several years before other families began to arrive. In the New Marlborough vital records there are other instances of birth records that cannot have happened there. Curiously, there is no birth record in Suffield for Anan in the Barbour Collection, which is generally authoritative for CT for that period. Where Anan’s birth record appears, however, is in Bennington VT, although in a typed transcription and not in an original image that this researcher (Watts-8451) has been able to locate. The typed date is offset by one year (i.e. 3 Oct 1739), which is extremely unlikely to be a coincidental birth of another person with the same birthday, one year later. More likely, father Nathaniel and mother Elizabeth moved to Vermont for a period before they joined other family members in New Marlborough.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Anan by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Anan:

Harmon-3590 and Harmon-3029 appear to represent the same person because: I just corrected the birth record for Harmon-3029 (I’m doing a lot of research on the Harmon, Norton, and Pike families of New Marlborough MA) and found that there are two Anan Harmons with same birthdate that should be merged. I don’t see any incompatibilities, but probably some cleanup will be required.
