Sir John Harpur is shown in the Harpur family Pedigree in the Visitation of the County of Derbyshire in 1569 as aged 23 as the son of Richard Harpur, and still alive at the time of the 1611 Visitation and married to:[1]
His marriage settlement to Isabell Pierrepont† of Holme Pierrepont in Nottinghamshire is dated 24 Sep 1566.[2]

1588:[7]Deed of release by Jane Harpur of Swarkestone widow and her younger son Richard Harpur (as executors of the late Richard Harpur of Swarkestone, one of the Queen's Justices) to her elder son John Harpur, of all bedding, household goods and husbandry ware.
John Harpur esq. was named in the will of his cousin John Francis of Foremark, Derbyshire, on 27 December 1602.[8]
He was knighted on 21 Apr 1603.[9]
The will of Sir john Harpur of Swarkestone is dated 20 Sep 1622 and was proved on 11 November 1622.[10] It is a very long will and includes mention of his grandson John Harpur son of his deceased son John Harpur, and 3 daughters of his son Sir Richard Harpur.
Sir John Harpur died in 1622 and was buried at Swarkestone.[11][12]
An 18th century reading of the inscription on his memorial at Swarkestone Church says he died on 7 Oct 1622[13] (this has later been misread as 1627) and names his father and wife.

Cox (1877), states that the manor & advowson of Breadsall passed to John Harpur (d. 1622), younger son of Sir John Harpur of Swarkeston, by his marriage to Dorothy, dau. of John Dethick (d. 1594), (Cox, 1877, p. 54).[1]
