Biography

http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/HARRELL/2010-07/1279414546

Dear Cousins,

I believe that Sarah Ann Harrell was likely the grandaughter of the Leroy (Old Fat Levi) who died on the Mississippi River in 1803 and the sister of the William Harrell 1810 who wrote the autobiography in which he identified his grandfather as Leroy Harrell (subject of much controversy with me). This all seems to make good sense to me, but regardless of her ancestry she was one of the first Harrells in Texas. One of her son-in laws fought with Houston during the revolution and helped capture Santa Anna. That is about as Texan as you can get.

Someday I may even sort out who Leroy was, but I am slowly but surely putting his family together.

Sarah Ann Harrell was born 30 December 1795 in Montgomery County, Georgia and moved with her family to Feliciana Parish, Louisiana in 1804. While her ancestry remains unknown I think she is likely related to the family of Leroy Harrell 1750 who died on the Mississippi River in 1803. This family arrived in Feliciana Parish Louisiana about 1804 and is the only family I know of in that area. I think she is likely the daughter of Samuel Harrell 1770 and the older sister of William Harrell 1810 who also settled in Texas. Sarah Ann Harrell married James Monroe Chance on 29 June 1818 in Saint Francisville, West Feliciana Parish, Louisiana. After 1825 James and Sarah moved to near Raymond in Hinds County Mississippi where they remained until about 1838 when Texas. They chose a homesite in Milam County, Texas, located between Gause and Caldwell, that became known as Chance's Praire. Sarah and James Chance had nine children born between 1819 and 1834. The three youngest were born in Louisiana and the remainder in Hinds County, Mississippi. All nine of their children accompanied them to Texas and most settled in Milam County. Sarah Ann Harrell died 3 April 1862, near Port Sullivan in Milam County, Texas. On December 13, 1935 James and Sarah were reinterred in the Texas State Cemetery in Austin,Texas, in honor of their contribution to help establish the Republic of Texas. William Harrell was born 8 Jan 1810 in East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana. He was the son of Samuel Harrell and the grandson of Leroy Harrell from South Carolina. He married Elizabeth Haygood born 1811 in Fairfield County, South Carolina on 17 Feb 1829 in Amite County, Mississippi. In 1844 William migrated to Bowie County, Texas and then to San Augustine County, Texas by 1846. He settled near Chireno, Nacogdoches County, Texas where he died 6 Nov 1903. William and Elizabeth had 5 sons and 6 daughters. One of his sons William L. Harrell, was born 8 Sep 1830 in Amite County Mississippi and died at Camp Butler in Springfield, Illinois while a prisoner of war during the Civil War. William married Mary L. Davis 11 Dec 1856 in San Augustine County, Texas. Their children were Emily Cornelia 1857, Edward J. 1860, and William Lafayette 1863. William was a brother of George Washington Herrell, mentioned previously. (Debra Carmouche 11 March 2003) (Daryl Andrews 11 Feb 2008)

I can't place Samuel Harrell 1770 in Georgia, but is was not a state in 1800 so there is no census available. We do know that his second wife was born in Georgia, so I think it likely that this family may have moved to Georgia, before moving to the Mississippi Territory in 1803.
