Note: Notes supplied by Bernita Gridley of Indianapolis Indiana. Author unknown. Obiturary of John Harrel. "On last thursday near one o'clock occured the death of another old pioneer at his home in Wright Township. John Harrel was born in Knox County Indiana in 1817 and first settled in Richland Township on coming to this county in 1828. His residence in Wright Township dates back forty five years, when the westside of White river contained but a few hundred inhabitants, and Wright Township but a few voters. The county was a wilderness filled with all kinds of game, including Wolves, Panthers and a few Bears. He first settled on the farm now owned by J.B. Terhune Jr., and after a number of years sold it to Thomas Clark and buying the farm where he has continued to live until his death, with the exception of one year recently spent in Nebraska with his children. John Harrel was an exemplary citizen in every respect. Truthful and industrious, his long life will bear the closet inspection. Having known him from childhood we are glad to testify to his kindness of heart and to the many tokens of friendship which he came into contact. The noblest trait of his character was his love for his family and his affection for them at all times. His lonf and useful life is full of incidents that indicate the true worth of the man, and know that he his gone all who personally knew him will feel the loss that has been sustained by the family and sympathize with them in their great grief." (This was copied from the original in May 1934). 2 "A few incidents of John Harrel's life. He carried the mail all through the civil war from Worthington to Sullivan. As long as he lived strangers were always welcome to eat and sleep at his house. While going to a funeral an old friend stopped at his house started from Kansas in a covered wagon with one good horse and one that was balky and made the remark he wished he had old Nell for the trip, and on John's return home someone of the family told him of what this friend had said. John said nothing but got on old Nell and overtook his friend near Howsville, Indiana and gave him old Nell and took the balky horse back home and wished his friend God speed. The family all said the boys had a great time with the balky horse for the horse sure was a balky one.".
