Biography

Flag of Glamorgan
Dick Harris was born in Swansea, Glamorgan, Wales.

Richard "Dick" Harris, son of Joseph Harris and Susan Rosser, was born in Swansea in 1864. Dick seems to have started his working life in the maritime industry like his father, working for at least a decade as a sailmaker from the time he left school (before 1881). At some point between 1891 and 1901 he began a new career as a foreman at the "Niagara Mineral Water Works" (owned by Emanuel THOMAS and son (his brother-in-law and nephew)), where he remained until his death. He was found drowned at Swansea Beach in Oct 1916, apparently having choked on his false teeth.

Residence/Family Business
Dick was living in Swansea with his wife and three children in 1912 [16]. The address stamped on a letter to his cousin Dick Rosser reads:

R. HARRIS
HIGIENIC [sic]
FISH RESTAURANT
35 MARLBOROUGH ROAD
SWANSEA

The 1911 Census of Wales shows his family as described in the above letter living at that address, and while his occupation is given as "miner, bottler at mineral water works", his wife's occupation is given as "Fryed Fish Shop"[8].

Death registration
An alternative death date of 1952 and corresponding registration [17] has been included in an online tree by a descendant; however the age at death does not quite fit and I have now rejected it based on the discovery of a newspaper article [14] and corresponding entry in the index of wills [15].

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Dick by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Dick:
