Mary Harris was born in 1625 in Charles City, Virginia to colonist and planter Captain Thomas Harris and his wife, Adria (Hoare) Harris. She married Thomas Ligon III (aka Thomas Lygon) in about 1649 in Henrico County. They lived on a plantation on the James River in Henrico County, Virginia, where Thomas held various government positions and was a leading member of Virginia society. His 2nd cousin was Sir William Berkeley, Royal Governor of the colony of Virginia: 1641-1652 & 1660-1677.
Thomas & Mary (Harris) Ligon were the parents of 7 children:
To son Richard Lygon, 100 acres in Henrico County, known by the name of "Curles," joining the land of Richard Cocke; and his father's stone ring
To son Hugh Lygon, 100 acres joining land of son Richard, and all my household goods
To grandson Thomas Farrar, items at 21 or marriage
To son in law Thomas Farrar, the Indian boy Robin given to his wife by her father
To grandson Henry Lygon, one horse
To son Hugh Lygon and my daughter [Johana] Hancock, all my sheep to be equally divided
Son in law Robert Hancock and daughter Johan [(Harris)] Hancock to be executors
Dated 16 Apr 1702/3. Probated Feb. 1703/4. Witnesses: Abraham Womack, John Hatcher, John Brown.
Codicil: "There should be no dispute over the 200 acres mentioned above. It should not go to a deceased son, William's heirs. It reverted back to me and is mine to leave. [Furthermore,] I will that my son-in-law, Robert Hancock give to my Indian boy, Robin, one Kersie coat, waist coat & breeches & a pair of Hose & shoes, two shirts & a hatt."[4][5][6][7]

There is a current movement to discredit the history of the family of the brother of Mary Harris Ligon . There are excellent records in the following reference relating to the histort of Curles Plantation and also deeds involving the Harris who lived there.
Here is documentation of the sworn deposition of a conversation with Mary Harris Ligon in 1679 after the death of her brother in August of 1678 in an Indian attack:

"Tho: Chamberlaine aged 27 yeares or thereabouts Deposeth
That he heard Mrs Lygon say that she & her Brother had made an agrement that Major Harris her
said Brother should have the whole proffitts of the survd place till her sonne come of age, since
her said soyne came of age this depont heard Major Harris say he had made an agreemt with his
kinsman for halfe the proffitts of the said place, and allsoe this deponent hath heard Mr Lygon
say the same"

The Ligon connection can also be proved by the will of Thomas Harris d 1679 ( from the first marriage of Major William Harris) and who died unmarried and childless which is signed as witness by his step mother Alice Harris and a Mary Ligon and which also references a "Cousin" Richard Ligon .
There is also documentation in a suit by Alice Harris Alves and her next husband, George Alvis, over the treatment of her son William Harris b ca 1673 who is bound out to the Ligon family and the court's response to not remove him from the Ligon agreement.
Harris-12064 and Harris-1880 appear to represent the same person because: Hi! The Mary Harris who married Thomas Lygon is Harris-1880, which had been set as rejected. Please merge - retaining the information for Harris-1880. Her will was probated in February 1703/4. Perhaps the 18 March 1703 date is a record involving her estate?
Whoever created this Profile has never read any of the many Ligon family references that names this wife of Thomas Ligon as Mary Harris, daughter of Capt Thomas Harris of Jamestown and his 1st wife Adria Hoare and grandddaughter of Julyan Tripplett and Thomas Hoare who left a bequest to his grandaughter Mary Harris in his 1727 Will. She most likely has another profile under her father Capt Thomas Harris 1585-1658.
Hi! I'm going to take another stab at sorting out all the Thoma Harrises of Virginia. Harris-751 appears to be correct as is, so I don't anticipate changes to him or his family, but I needed to add my to-do category so I could find him & Mary easily while working on the other Thomas Harrises & their families.
Harris-12706 and Harris-1880 appear to represent the same person because: Mary Harris is the only daughter of Capt Thomas Harris and his first wife, Audrey Hoare.
