Biography

Birth

John Harris was born circa 1720 in New Jersey. He is said to be the son of Samuel Harris (1697-1773) and Sarah Johnson (1697-1761).

Life Sketch:[1] John Harris, settled in Goshen Township which was formed in 1819 from Miami Township. John & family came to Clermont County with several families that were from New Jersey. All of John's offspring ended up in Clermont County and his daughter Jane AKAold blind Jane married James Harris.

Marriage and Family

He married Jemima Ashton, called Patty, (c. 1730-after 4 August 1821) on 25 April 1750 in Monmouth County, New Jersey.

Children of the Harris-Ashton Marriage

  1. John W. Harris Jr. born circa 1751 in New Jersey. He died on 26 September 1850 in Clermont County, Ohio, United States.
  2. Jane Harris born in 1755 in Monmouth County, New Jersey. She married James Harris (1750-1812), her cousin, in 1778 in Sussex, New Jersey. Jane died on 23 September 1855 in Wayne Township, Clermont County, Ohio, United States.
  3. William Nathan Harris born in 1763 in New Jersey. He married Sarah Rich (1766-1847) on 30 July 1793 in Bourbon County, Kentucky. William died on 15 April 1833 in Edenton, Clermont, Ohio, United States.
  4. Merry Harris born circa 1767. She married a Mr. Taylor before 1821.
  5. Abner Harris born c. 1769 in New Jersey. He married Sarah Unknown. Abner died after 19 January 1844 (date of his will) in Clermont County, Ohio, United States. Probate was 10 February 1844.
  6. Jemima Harris born c. 1775 in New Jersey. She married Thomas Powers (1775-1844) c. 1800 in New Jersey. Jemima died c. 1830 in Wayne Township, Clermont, Ohio, United States.

Will

He gave his last will and testament on 4 August 1821 in Clermont County, Ohio, United States. John signed with his mark. Copies of the will are posted at his profile at FamilySearch.

Research Notes

Excerpt from p. 504 of the History of Clermont County, Ohio, by Louis Everts:

the following are listed as property holders in Wayne Township - all stated the following after their name "No. 3337, Harvie + Fenn, Orig prop.: John Harris Sr., John Harris Jr., Starke Harris, Jane Harris (no tax paid on personal property so probably was non resident), Wm Harris; page 491 talks about the "Harris neighborhood" New Jersey settlement formed in the southeastern part of Goshen about 1814; the Harris family father, John Harris, has made his first settlement on the island of Plainville, but was forced to leave it by high water. He then came to Goshen, where he died at about 100 yrs of age. After John Randall's settlement (about 1814) William Harris and Silas Jordan, who had occupied that land moved to Wayne Township / In the Harris neighborhood Judge John Beatty lived...another New Yorker was Stephen Pray, who made his settlement here abt. 1815, in which year his son, John W. Pray was born in Goshen. Other sons were Hiram, Charles, Stephen and George.
