Biography

In the Harris Pedigree in the Visitation of Essex in 1612[1] Frances was recorded as the 3rd daughter of Sir William Harris [alias Herris] of Creeksea, Essex, and Alice Smith.

Frances was a beneficiary of the will of her father Sir William Harris alias Herris, the will made on 21 Dec 1615, at which time she was unmarried.[2]

Frances was recorded in the will of her bother Thomas Harris, the will made on 10 Mar 1616/1617 and proved 08 Jul 1617[3], again she was unmarried.

Marriage

In the Herald's Visitation of Devonshire in 1620 it was recorded that Frances Harris, daughter of Sir William Harris of Essex, was the wife of Ambrose Roope of Townstal, Devon, the son of John Roope and Mary, daughter of Richard Rouse.[4][5][6]

In the will of Frances' brother William Herris, the will made on 28 Mar 1622 and proved on 11 May 1622[7], he made a bequest of £100 to his brother in Law Mr. Roope.

Children

  • John Roope[8] (baptised 13 Nov 1625 at 'Townstal or St Clement Dartmouth', Devon, son of Ambrose and Francys[9]
  • Mary Roope[8]
  • Ambrose Roope[8]
  • Arthur Roope[8]
  • Frances Roope[8]
  • Dorothy Roope[8]
  • William Roope[8]

In the will of her husband Ambrose Roope, the will made on 01 Nov 1643 and proved on 11 Dec 1647[8], Frances was bequeathed £150 and two closes of land called Dittesham Parkes. The will referred to the following children of the Testator; Mary, Frances, Dorothey, John, Ambrose, Arthure and William. All were under the age of 21 when the will was made.

Death

Her date and place of death are unknown.

Research Notes

Ligon in his "Ligon Family and Connections" of 1947[10] included a section on the Harris family, apparently based on information sent to him by John Bennett Boddie.[11] It was stated that Frances the daughter of Sir William Harris of Creeksea married an Oliver Raymond. However, the Frances Harris/Herris who married Oliver Raymond appears to be the Frances Harris/Herris daughter of Sir William Harris/Herris and Francis Astley of Shenfields, Margaretting, Essex.[12] In the will of Sir William Herris of Shenfields, Margaretting, Essex, of 1632, he made a bequest to his daughter Frances Raymond.[13] See also the Raymond pedigree in the Visitations of Essex.[14]
