Higgason Harris was named for his uncle, Higgason Grubbs, his mother’s oldest brother. This name has come down at least three more generations where it was remembered as Hickerson.
I thank Alice Maxey Topham ( ) for arrangement and dates of Harris children. On 3 Apr 1744 Higgason Harris was born in Albemarle Co., Virginia, to Robert Harris and Nancy Grubbs. Robert Harris came to Madison County Kentucky about 1790 settling on lands of Higgason Grubb on Tates Creek or Muddy Creek. At age 26 Higgason Harris married Nancy Garland in Madison County where they lived until moving to Boone County, Missouri, about 1816-17, taking land there by 1819 on Bonne Femme Creek.
Dear Chet: How are you and your family? I haven't contacted you in a long time. I wanted to say that I got in touch with Louise Hudspeth, a couple of years ago, who supplied me with a large download on descendants of John and Polly Ogan. She didn't have anything on our Harrises. It took me 22 years to find him in the census. In 1982 I was perusing a San Joaquin Co. history and found an article stating that Higgason lived to age 92. That meant his name should appear in the 1850 and 1860 censuses. Just last evening I finally found Higgason Harris on the 1860 census, aged 86, living with his daughter, Teresa, and her husband, Milton Jones. I've been using Ancestor.com for many months, not realizing that 1860 and several other censuses are indexed by every person. I keyed "Harris" born in "Virginia" aged "88." Then I tried "87". With "86" I got "Hickerson Harris" in Linn Co., Missouri! I spent a lot of time on the 1850 and gave up. (I still can't find him in 1850)
