Biography

Mary Harris was the daughter of Robert Harris, "immigrant to James Cittie," and the younger sister of Martha (Harris) Jennings.[1] (current research indicates that Robert Harris and Mary Jane Crump had only two daughters: Mary and Martha).

Mary Harris, the youngest daughter of Robert Harris of Isle of Wight county, was married to Anthony Spiltimber by September 1665, when her husband filed suit against John Jennings:[2].[3]

"Deed stating that Anthony Spiltimber,[1] of Surry, formerly commenced suit against John Jennings before the Gov'r and Council in Sept. 1665, in right of Mary his wife, dau. of Mr. Robert Harris, formerly of the Isle of Wight, deceased, and sister unto Martha, daughter of the said Robert Harris and late wife to John Jennings, concerning an interest in land which I suppose fell to me by right of marrying the said Mary youngest sister to the said Martha, which the said Jennings in his right to the part of the Land altogether defended; which suit &c. John Spiltember was father of Anthony &c."[2][4]
[1] From Surry Co. records: Anthony Spilltimber made his will March 30, 1672. Names wife Mary, dau. Patty and dau. Martha, brother John. Speaks of a debt due from Capt. Jennings. In the same records, Anthony Spiltimber is mentioned as son of John Spiltimber, dec., who died about 1656, leaving James Mason overseer of his will.[2][5]

Mary

Mary Harris, daughter of Robert Harris and wife of Anthony Spiltimber[6][2]

Jane Plow, aged 74, said she knew Mary Harris afterwards wife to Anthony Spiltimber who had issue a dau. named Martha and she married Robert House Jr. and was delivered a dau. named Mary, now the wife of Thomas Carrell. 7 June 1704.[7]

Research Note

Note: Matthew Swann was married to MARY Harris widow of Spiltimber, their daughter was Elizabeth Swann who married John Shugan. Katheryn Gearhart had to have made a mistake when putting in Elizabeth, all the records show clearly her name was MARY not Elizabeth.12/4/2018 A. Kreutzer. :Note: possibly "Elizabeth" was a mistake in the posting of information on the Gearhart site

"Elizabeth" Harris & connection to Edward Jones (from Katheryn Gearhart [8]):

  • Edward Jones m Abigail Sugars, daughter of John Sugars (and possibly his first wife, Elizabeth, widow of (1) John Mason and (2) Thomas Clay of Surry County). John Sugars' second wife was Elizabeth Swann, daughter of Matthew Swann.
  • In 1704, Elizabeth Swann, widow of John Drew, was married to John Sugars (as his second wife). (Quit Rents, information from Katheryn Gearhart[8]
In the 1704 Quit Rents, John Sugars[9] was taxed for his wife's land. This was his "second wife, Elizabeth Swann, widow of John Drew....She was the daughter of Mathew Swan and Mary {not Elizabeth} Harris, widow Spiltimber." (information from Katheryn Gearhart[8]
  • Matthew Swann's wife was "Mary Harris, widow Spiltimber"[not Elizabeth] (from Katheryn Gearhart[8]
  • Will of Matthew Swann, dated December 14, 1702 and probated January 5, 1702, names daughter Elizabeth, wife of John Drew, daughter Mary wife of William Phillips and daughter Sarah. Matthew Swann did not mention his wife Mary, so she had died before Dec 14, 1702. Daughter Sarah was single and one of the executors of her father's will.[10]

from Stanhope's page:

Matthew Swann. His Will was dated December 14, 1702 and probated Jan. 5, 1702. He mentioned dau., Elizabeth, wife of John Drew, dau., Sarah; Elizabeth, dau. of John Drew; son-in-law John Drew; dau., Mary, wife of William Phillips; and grandson, John Phillips. Executors were John Drew and Sarah Swann. Witnesses were Arthur Allen, William Chambers, John Allen, and Robert Ruffin. (The Swann connection is through the Luxfords and Lunsfords, see anon). Edward Drew, probable br. of Matthew Swann's son-in-law, m. Frances Newitt; issue: Mary Drew m. John Harris, obit 1764 ... Drew m. Simon Turner. Edward Drew was most likely a grandson of 'Edward Drew senr.' noted in the above deed, a son of his son, Richard.

...

Robert Harris d 1588... not this Mary's dad, but interesting that there's a Batte connection:
In his Will, dated 1 Aug. 1587 and proved 30 Oct. 1588, Harris described himself as ‘one of the masters of the court of Chancery’, and appointed his wife Anne sole executrix, leaving her his house in St. John Street, Clerkenwell, and a life interest in the manor of Woodmansterne, Surrey. He made provision for his two married daughters, Mary and Martha and their husbands, William Bowes and Marlyon Rithe,* and for his unmarried daughter, Katherine. His two sons-in-law were to share his armour and most of his books. Vis. London (Harl. Soc. i), 53; Foss, Judges, v. 401; Cam. (1) Martha (d. 1593), da. and coh. of Robert Harris , 1s. 4da.; (2) Urytha (d.1595), wid. of William Batte or Battes, of Mitcham, Surr.* suc. fa. 1606.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Mary by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Mary:

switched mother from Claiborne-3 to Crump-939.

Send me a trusted list request to Crump-939 if you'd like me to add you - and let me know if you'd like to be a profile manager for her also.

Cheers, Liz

This Mary Harris was the daughter of Robert Harris and Mary Jane Crump. The Mary Claiborne was actually the wife of an entirely different Maj Robert Harris d1701 in New Kent Co., VA.

Also, the note by Katheryn Gearhart that the wife of William Swann was an Elizabeth Harris is wrong since the actual court records clearly name her as Mary Harris and her No 6 source is of very dubious reliability since he continues to connect various lines of Harris into one family, much like the much refuted works by John Bennett Boddie did 60 years ago that are stiil accepted as true by many when DNA had proven these connections impossible.

Hi Linda! I added a rejected match for Harris-1921 & Harris-1860, even though this profile has her husbands & children. The father of the Mary Harris who married Spiltimber & Swann is a different Robert Harris than the one in New Kent. And sist Martha for Mary Harris-1860 was dead, leaving a widower, by Sept. 1665 (Mary Harris-1921 has a sister Martha, but born 1654). I'll send trusted list requests for the husbands & kids; you can add me if you'd like me to move them to the correct Mary. Thanks!

Harris-6040 and Harris-1921 appear to represent the same person because: they appear to be the same person. They have the same siblings
