Lucy Harris, the daughter of James Harris and Mary Harris was born 12 Apr 1754 in Albemarle County, Virginia, United States. Her date of death is unknown as her unmarked grave was lost to the elements on the Higgason Grubbs Family homestead at Tate's & Shallowford Creek in Madison, Kentucky. [1][2]
Lucy Harris was the wife of Virginia patriot Higgason Grubbs. [3] Lucy and her husband Higgason are documented as defending Fort Boonesborough and Hoy's Station, during the Native attacks in 1778/79. In addition, their names are engraved on side 2 of the Fort Boonesborough Historical Monument as follows:
Grubbs, Capt. Higgason
Grubbs, Mrs. Higgason
The monument which stands near the entrance of the old fort at Fort Boonesborough State Park in Madison County was erected in 1981 by the Members of the Society of Boonesborough to commemorate the first pioneer families of Kentucky
The inscription on side one reads, “Dedicated by Their Descendants to the Sacred Memory of the Brave Pioneers who Entered the Wilderness of what Later became Kentucky and Formed the Settlement known as Boonesborough, First Fortified Settlement in Kentucky. We Honor These, Among the First Families of Kentucky”. [4]
