Biography

Murdered by Luther King who received 5 years for 2nd degree murder and Elkin King who received 2 years for voluntary manslaughter. The story as told by family is that there was a fracas at the blacksmith shop owned by James. The children were there (Hosea, Elmer, Johnnie and Bertha). The two King men had started the fracas and left to go home and James told the kids that they were going to come back and shoot us so they started toward the house. Hosea had gotten the shotgun but had picked up squirrel shot. They were probably less than a 100 yards from the house when the gunshot sounded and James lied dead at the base of a big White Oak tree. He died of a gunshot wound to the head. Luther King was hit in the head but survived his injury. I remember the tree from being showed when I was just a kid. More information and testimony of the murder trial can be found at the Grant County Museum in Sheridan, Arkansas.

James was born in 1872. James Harris ... He passed away in 1923. [1]
