Note NI34"Susan's mother died May 24, 1862. Susan, at age eighteen, was obliged to assume responsibility for running the household. In a short time her father remarried and decided to move the family to Texas. The older brothers and Susan were unwilling to go. Susan happily accepted the invitation of her mother's half-sister, Ann Scott Gordon to live in the Gordon home in Columbia.
Carrie and Minnie Gordon, her cousins, were like younger sisters and their deep affection lasted all their lives... Susan formed close friendships with other cousins in the Columbia area, the Haydens and Lloyds in particular...
It is not known when Bushrod Borum and Susan Harris became acquainted, whether before or after the Civil War...
She had a great sense of humor which helped her overcome the trials of raising a large family, and she adjusted willingly to another home when they moved to St. Clair County. It is to the credit of their parents that the Borum children grew up happy and fun loving. Hard work was a must, but there was always time for birthday celebrations, church activities, neighborhood gatherings and school affairs. Susan's enthusiasm for such occasions insured their success and gave the children treasured memories...
The family loved music and shared a natural talent. The day Bushrod came home from town with a new organ in the wagon was the beginning of the ongoing custom of gathering about the instrument and having a songfest when the day's work was done. When Susan saw the organ for the first time, she was so surprised and excited that she could not hold back happy tears. Neighbors and friends often gathered to share an evening of music and fun with the Borums..."
