Born in Colorado, her family moved to Canada when she was very young. Her mother Flo passed away in Canada and the family moved back to the states. She lived with her sister Cleopha before going away to attend high school. She lived with two different families as a servant while she attended and is in the census with one of them in 1940 in Utah. When she graduated she began to work as an assistant to a doctor, where she did everything any nurse would do, despite no formal training, including assisting the doctor in births. She moved to Jerome, Arizona to work as a servant in a boarding house run by Mattie VanWinkle, where she met her first husband Van and married him in the early 1940's. [1]
