Biography

Samuel E. Harris was born in about 1792[1] in Franklin County, Pennsylvania.[2] He was the eldest child of Ephraim Harris and Hannah Elliott. I can find no record of Samuel's full middle name, but it was probably either Ephraim or Elliott.

Samuel received a "common school" education in Franklin County and in Butler County to which the family moved in 1804 when Samuel was twelve years old. Samuel's father, Ephraim Harris, was a farmer and a merchant (running a dry goods store out of a room in his log home), and the first Postmaster of Harrisville.[3] Samuel undoubtedly worked on the farm while attending school.

On 17 April 1817, Samuel married Mary Forker, the daughter of Adam Forker (1761-1836) and Jane Green (1760-1836), in Butler County, Pennsylvania.[4] Samuel was a farmer, a tavern and hotel owner/operator, a Postmaster, and a teacher.[5] Samuel and Mary had at least seven children. They were:

  • Hannah Harris (1818-aft. 1860), m. Thomas O. Waddle;
  • Ephraim E. Harris (1820-1885), m. Martha Crilly;
  • Sarah Ann Harris (1825-1899), m. Joseph B. Nicklin;
  • Frances A. Harris (1830-1904), m. 1st Cyrus R. Waddle, m. 2nd Adam H. Kerr;
  • Mary Jane Harris (1832-?), m. John A. McGowan;
  • James D. Harris (1834-1862), m. Ellen Alexander; and
  • Harriet Harris (1838-1907), m. James C. McDonald.

In 1825, Samuel's father founded the town of Harrisville, Butler County, Pennsylvania. Ephraim laid out the town and began selling tracts in April 1825. Ephraim served as Postmaster of the new town for one year, after which the position was filled by Samuel beginning in 1826.[6]

In 1830, the town of Harrisville built its first school house, and Samuel was the school's first teacher.[7]

In 1846, Samuel sold his land in Harrisville and he moved to New Brighton, Beaver County, Pennsylvania[8] where, according to various histories, he is said to have died.[9] His FamilySearch profile gives a death date of 7 December 1858, listing the Gilmore Family Tree as the source for that date, but the Gilmore's source is not given.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Samuel by comparing test results with other carriers of his ancestors' Y-chromosome or mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Samuel:
