Biography

Effa was born on June 13, 1884, in Atlantic, Cass County, Iowa. She was the daughter of Edward Harris and Margaret Acker.

Effa was married on June 23, 1910, to Sheldon "Shelly" Lafe Smith on June 23, 1910, in Cass County, Iowa.[1]

She passed away on May 31, 1948, in Atlantic, Cass County, Iowa and is buried in the Atlantic Cemetery there.

An obituary was published in the Atlantic News Telegraph on June 2, 1948.

Funeral Notices

For Mrs. S.L. Smith

Funeral services for Mrs. Effa G. Smith, wife of Sheldon L. Smith, were held at the Roland, Peacock & Baxter funeral home this afternoon at 3 o'clock, the Rev. L. D. Thomas officiating, assisted by the Rev. C. W. Hohanshelt. Mrs. Lyle Harris and Mrs. Elmer Nelson, with the latter as accompanist, sang "In the Garden" and "Old Rugged Cross."'

Serving as casket bearers were Cecil and Claude Malone, Harold Karwal, Joe Herbert, Max and Paul Smith. Interment was in the Atlantic Cemetery.'

1900 - United States Federal Census - In the 1900 census, Edward E. Harris, 40, is living with his wife, Margret A. Harris, 38, in Pymosa Township, Cass County, Iowa. Living with them are their children, Effa G. Harris, 15; Edna S. Harris, 14; Lester V. Harris, 8; Ira A. Harris, 5, and Marria E. Harris, 3.[2]

1910 - United States Federal Census - In the 1910 census, Ed Harris, 50, and his wife, Margaret Harris, 47, are farming in Pymosa Twp., Cass Co., IA. Living with them are their children, Effa Harris, 25; Lester Harris, 18; Ira Harris, 15; Maria Harris, 13; and Leo Harris, 5.[3]

June 23, 1910 - Marriage - Married to Sheldon "Shelly" Lafe Smith in Cass County, Iowa.

1930 - United States Federal Census - In 1930, Shelly Smith, 52, is living in Pymosa Twp., Cass County, Iowa, with his wife, Effa G. Smith, 45. He is farming. Living with them are their children, Zelma M. Smith, 19; Margaret A. Smith, 15, and Delbert E. Smith, 6 months.[4]

1940 - United States Federal Census - In the 1940 census, Sheldon L. Smith, 62, is living in Pymosa Twp., Cass County, Iowa, with his wife, who is mislisted as Eppa G. Smith, 55, and their son Delbert E. Smith, 10. Sheldon, who is listed as having an 8th grade education is farming. Effa is shown as also having an 8th grade education.[5]

May 31,1948 - Death - Atlantic, Cass County, Iowa.
