Dr. Paul Lauer Obituary
The family of well-known Everett surgeon, Dr. Paul Lauer, is sad to announce that he passed away on March 20, 2007, after a long decline in his health. He was 88 years old and had lived the last several years at the Kenney Retirement Community in West Seattle. Paul was born in 1918 in Iowa City, Iowa, to Edward H. and Edna Mayworm Lauer where his father was a teacher at the University of Iowa. In the 1930's, the family moved to Seattle when Edward joined the faculty of the University of Washington and eventually became the Dean of its College of Arts and Sciences. While attending Broadway High School, Paul met and fell in love with Roosevelt High School student, Celia S. Harrison, daughter of Prof. Joseph B. and Ellen Shelton Harrison. The two families were acquainted because Celia's father was also on the faculty at the University and headed the English Department. Both Paul and Celia graduated from the University of Washington, and Paul went on to medical school at the University of Michigan. They were married in Seattle in 1942. Paul served as a Navy second lieutenant and the ship's physician on the USS Missouri and was fortunate to have been on the deck of that battleship in Tokyo Bay at the signing of the surrender by the Japanese ending World War II. After Paul's surgical residency at San Francisco General Hospital, the Lauers moved to Everett in 1949 when Paul joined the small group of Everett Clinic founders as a surgeon, the clinic's first specialist. He enjoyed a long, distinguished career there until he retired in the mid-1980's and moved to Mill Creek. During their years in Everett, Paul played the clarinet in the Everett Symphony and both he and Celia sang in the First Congregational Church choir. The talented couple enjoyed collaborating on many artistic projects, building two harpsichords together and sharing their creativity with friends and family through the years with memorable social events and activities. Paul struggled to recover after Celia's sudden death in 1999. Surviving Paul are his brother, David, of San Francisco, CA; his daughter, Nancy Sipple, of Vashon Island; and his sons, David, of Lake Stevens, Douglas, of Marysville, and John, of Seattle. He has five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The Lauers and their extended families plan a reunion/ memorial for this summer at the old Harrison family property on Orcas Island where Celia and Paul honeymooned and enjoyed family vacations. Paul's children suggest directing any remembrances that friends or colleagues might want to make in Paul's honor to the Seattle Art Museum where Celia was a docent for many years.[3]
