Biography

Isaiah Harrison is the son of Jeremiah Harrison and Catherine (Adams) Harrison. He was baptized February 1, 1762, in Augusta County, Virginia in a place which later became part of Rockingham County, Isaiah relocated to Greene County, Tennesse, where he became a planter and a preacher. The settlement of what is now Greene County was begun about 1788.

In the early 1780's, Isaiah, and William "Billy" were the pioneer settlers of the Harrison community, Nolichucky River, ten miles S. of Greeneville, TN. Founder of the Harrison Com. Ch. and contemporary of Bishop Francis Asbury.

According to the minutes of the eighth annual convention, held at the Friends’ Meeting-house at Lick Creek, in Jefferson County, on August 12 and 13, 1822, Isaiah was one of the charter members of the Lick Creek Meeting-house of Friends, [Quakers] in Greene County. [1]

The first church services were hosted in Isaiah Harrison's house and in 1792, "Harrison's Meeting House" was built, nearby. Members of the church are buried in the Harrison Cemetery. http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=pv&GRid=17958643&PIpi=148970970

Isaiah married Mary Ragen / Reagan. According to Find A Grave memorial #153453349, Mary was born circa 1763, in Virginia and died 1796, in Green County, Tennessee. Isaiah married his second wife, Elizabeth Whittenburgh, probably the mother of most of his children, on January 6, 1800.

In 1808, Isaiah deeded land for the Meetinghouse to George Wells, Stephen Brooks, John Kelly, Sr, John Kelly, Jr. and John Whittenberg as Trustees in Trust.

Researcher's notes

Analyzed first names against Watagua, NC lines; very similar first names.

Worth Ray, TN Cousins, p. 70 tells about a group of Quakers came over the mountains from NC about 1790 including ELLIS's. Isaiah is mentioned as representing the Maryville Branch of Quakers and the Hickory Valley Branch at an 1822 convention. The Quaker movement was large but of short life, and stronger around Greeneville. This convention had to do with abolition of slavery. James Jones was President; Note: on the 1830 census Isaish had 2 slaves. [2]

Isaiah is buried with his second and third wives in Harrison Cemetery [The Bethesda United Methodist Church, S. of Old Jonesborough Rd, on Harrison Rd, Greene Co. TN] near Harrison School, six miles south of Greeneville, Tenn, in well marked graves. From his Will, and other reliable sources, the probable children are identified.

There is an error in the list of siblings. Isaiah's sister Lydia is not Lydia Gregg, but Lydia Donnell Harrison.

Lydia Donnell Harrison was the daughter of Jeremiah and married her first cousin, Reuben Harrison. She was born and lived in what is now Rockingham County, VA. She is buried at the old Harrison burial ground (there are two) by Linville Creek with Reuben. She could not have married Robert Gregg later, because she died before Reuben. Reuben married a second time after Lydia Donnell's death.

Lydia Alice Harrison, parentage unknown, married Robert Gregg. She and Robert Gregg are buried together in Tennessee.

Lydia Gregg and Lydia Donnell Harrison's children are, of course, different. Lydia Donnell Harrison's children are mentioned in Reuben Harrison's will. These two women have been erroneously conflated in many places across the internet, but they are definitely two distinct Lydia's.

You are correct. Are you able to fix this mistake? ------After looking the profile over, I think the best way is to send the manager a private note. I am not a manager of Lydia, so click on her profile to find the managers. Best of luck!

I do not agree with all these "half" siblings noted for Isaiah Harrison .... He and Elizabeth Whittenburg are who I am directly descended from. I have sent a photo I took in a past Decoration Day to upload to this site.
