Research Notes

None of the generally accepted sources for William Harris and Temperance Overton show a son named Stephen; no records of a Stephen Harris could be found for Kent County, Virginia between 1700-50; online genealogy searches returned no results for a Stephen Harris and a Nancy Gray; and there is no record in any of the online lists of soldiers at Kings Mountain of a Stephen Harris.

If we assume that this profile is for an Edward Harris, then there are several possibilities:

1. He was the son of William Harris and Temperance Overton who is shown on his father's profile as born about 1711 in Hanover County (actually New Kent County at that time) and married to Ann ____. If this is the case, he should be merged with Edward Harris.
2. He was the Edward Harris, born 27 Nov 1704 in St. Peter's Parish, New Kent County, Virginia to Edward and Elizabeth Harris. [1] If this is the case, he would not have fought at the Battle of Kings Mountain in 1780 at the age of 76, but he does appear to have had two brothers on record in New Kent Co.:
a. John, b. 24 Apr 1710 in St. Peter's Parish [2]
b. Thomas, b. 14 Jun 1712 in St. Peter's Parish [3]
3. There was an Edward Harris, born 06 Feb 1726 in St. Peter's Parish, New Kent County, Virginia to Edward Harris (possibly the above Edward b. 1704) and an unnamed wife. [4] This Edward Harris born in 1726 could have been at the battle of Kings Mountain at the age of 54, but there is nothing that definitively links this Edward to Kings Mountain.
4. There was an Edward Harris who enlisted in a Virginia unit May 1777 for 3 years, [5] but probably would not have fought with the Carolina militias at Kings Mountain.
5. The only record of an Edward Harris associated with the Battle of Kings Mountain is from his widow Martha Harris (married 16 Jan 1777) who filed in Green County, Georgia for a pension based on her husband Edward Harris's service in Col. C. McDowell's Regiment under the command of Gen’l [Griffith] Rutherford in the Militia of Burks [sic: Burke] county in the State of North Carolina. This Edward was taken prisoner by the British and carried to Kings Mountain, where he witnessed the battle; was subsequently at the siege of Wilmington, North Carolina in Nov 1781; and died 20 Mar 1826. [6]
This record may be substantiated by another record for an Edward Harris who drew pay 01 May 1792 for service in North Carolina through Aug 1783. [7]
6. And finally, there is Marie Harris Key's account of the Edward Harris Family that includes: [8]
An Edward Harris (1675-1735) of of St. Paul's Parish who was the son of immigrant Thomas Harris, resided in New Kent County, married to Mary Giles, and had a son named Edward. This line of Harrises removed to the part of Lunenburg County that later became Charlotte County, and then moved on to Wilkes County, North Carolina.
An Edward Harris (c. 1710 - c. 1780) had three sons: Miniard, David, and Edward. Miniard (c. 1742-1780) fought and died in the Battle of Kings Mountain, and some say his brother Edward (b. c. 1746) died there too, except that the Edward Harris who was presumed to be Miniard's brother is on record in Wilkes County, NC as late as 1790 (possibly the Edward Harris who married 12 Apr 1783 to Catharine Jones in Wilkes County [9] ) This Edward is believed to have removed to Laurens County, South Carolina, where he appeared in the 1800 & 1810 censuses, but not the 1820 census.
A Key family legend says the above father Edward (c. 1710 - c. 1780) was taken prisoner by the British in a separate action the same year, and that he died soon after being taken prisoner.

Harris-2862 and Harriss-75 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, same birth date, same wife. Choose one set of parents and leave a note indicating that there are other possibilities for the parents.

Harriss-75 and Harris-2862 are not ready to be merged because: I am unwilling to do the merge (proposed by me) due to the uncertainties mentioned in the bios.

Harris-2862 and Harriss-75 look like the same person based on name and dates. But they have different parents. This usually indicates that either (1) they are the same person but one set of parents is wrong, or (2) they are different people and the birth and/or death information for one of them is wrong. Could the profile managers confirm their information and/or work together to resolve this? This has been in an Unmerged Match state for over three years.

hi again! just found a book written by (close) descendants... see https://thehardyparty.com/harris/key_book/marie_key_book.pdf

Looks like it was source for info about Edward (1710-1780) with sons Miniard, David, and Edward (with Miniard killed in Battle of Kings Mountain). not a searchable pdf & LOTS of information.

Hi Fred! The unmerged match was because the fathers aren't the same (one William m Temperance & one m Mary Giles - see comments Harris-2867). Also the wives are different, so it seems possible that two different Stephens & their children have been merged.
