Biography

Jonathan Hart was born about 1650. No sources have been found for his place of birth. Possible locations are Southold, New Haven Colony and Flushing, Long Island.

"HART, Jonathan (1650± - 1711+) & Hannah [BUDD] (1657± - ); ca 1670/75?, ca 1685?; ?Southold, LI".[1]. Let's say their marriage was about 1680. If wife Hannah was born 1657, she would be 13 years old in 1670.

"The Hart family are descended from Edmund Hart, one of the early settlers in Flushing. In 1657 he, with other inhabitants of that town, issued a strenuous protest against the order of the Dutch Government forbidding them to entertain Quakers. For this he was imprisoned. His son, Jonathan Hart, came to Rye in 1685. He married Hannah Budd."[2]

From the Southold Town Records by Case:[3]

To all Christian people to whome these presents shall come Greeting. Know Ye, that whereas Mr John Budd did give unto his dagghter Hannah, a hundred acres of land, and four acres of Meadow. We whose names are underwritten doe acknowledge that we have received of this abovesaid Gift of our fathers, the one halfe in lands and meadow and the other part by a Bill of twenty nine pounds, to our full satisfaction We say received from John Tutthill Senr Executor to the estate of our honoured father Mr John Budd ; this 15th of December 1685.
As Witness our hands.

"Jonathan Hart, in 1685, bought land on the lower part of Budd's Neck, to which he added in 1702. He was chosen one of the townsmen of Rye in 1686. He was called 'senior' in 1702. He married Hannah, daughter of John Budd."[4]

Research Notes

  • There appears to be some disagreement on wether Jonathan's father was Edmund Hart or Edward Hart.
Mr. Pellatreau states Jonathan's father was Edmund Hart. Mrs. Kennedy states the father was Edward Hart. On page 10 of her Edward Hart; Descendants and Allied Families, she quotes Mr. Pellatreau as ". . . The Hart family are descended from Edward Hart, one of the early settlers of Flushing . . . ".
However, Mr. Pellatreau actually states, "The Hart family are descended from Edmund Hart, one of the early settlers in Flushing. . . . " [emphasis added]
On page 11, Mrs. Kennedy has a diagram of "Names of lot owners in Providence, R. I. 1638" which includes Edward Hart.</br>
It appears probable that Edward Hart landed in Massachusetts, moved to Rhode Island, then on to Flushing. Meanwhile, Edmund Hart appears to have a connection to Southold, Long Island and Rye, New York.
Additional research may help clarify this matter.
