Biography

John Hart (1801-1873) was the third of John Hart (1769-1822) and Ann James' (1773-1851) children.

He married Sarah Knotwell (1798-1833) on 12 Feb 1824 in Gwennap, Cornwall. When Sarah died in 1833 at the age of 35, she left 5 small children including a set of twins (John and Richard Hart b 1826).

John quickly remarried Jane Bartle (b1801) on 26 December 1833 in Pennanarworthal, Cornwall. They went on to have 4 children of their own between 1834 and 1839.

John became a successful self-made business man in Ponsanooth, Cornwall, as a brewer and maltster. He traded under the name Hart and Sons[1] [2]and in 1871 he employed 4 men, 2 boys and a servant [3] [4].

When John passed away in 1873 he left a significant estate worth £4000. He left the brewing business to his youngest son Thomas Bartle Hart (1838-1889) and his will documented detailed arrangements for the family to share in various legacies, annuities, and profits [5].

The Treluswell Brewery was operated by Thomas Bartle Hart until his death in 1889 at which time the business was sold by his half brother James Hart (b1832) [6].

Note: Richard Hart (1826-1879) married Grace Harvey Tresidder (1827-1880) and emigrated to Australia. The Tresidder family were also a Cornish brewing family at Quay Road, Penryn [7].
