Elias was born in 1804. He was the son of David Hart and Lucy Page. He married Cornelia Staker in 1834. Their life, like most early members of the church, was hard and taxing, just trying to put food on the table for the family. It was the custom of the country at that time to allow hogs to run lose in the woods, and if the saints were in need of meat, they could go and kill one, which Elias did on one occasion. He was accused by one of his brethren of killing one that did not belong to him He was tried by his fellowship, but it is not known whether he was excommunicated or not. At the trial, Elias didn't like the way things were going; he had killed the pig with good intentions, thinking it was all right, and he became quite anxious with the brethren. Consequently he picked up his hat and walked out, telling those present they could all "go to hell." It was extremely hard walking away from a home and family, after joining the Mormons. Two of the children died about this time, John and James and Elias died shortly after.
From family records, Elias Hart died at the time of the expulsion of the saints from Nauvoo, Illinois, in 1846. His wife Cornelia, with her seven children were left to make their way across the plains with other members of the church. He passed away in 1846. [1]
