Biography

Mary Hart was born about 1828, as estimated from her 1850 census record. She was born in Albemarle County, Virginia. Her parents were James Hart and his first wife, Sophia (Harris) Hart. Mary is thought to be their firstborn child.

Mary's father was a prosperous farmer that had substantial land holdings (valued at $35,000 in 1860); he also held numerous slaves (20 enslaved people were listed on the 1860 slave schedule).

Mary's mother, Sophia, died sometime prior to the 1850 census. Mary and her siblings were enumerated alone in 1850 with their widowed father.

In the 1850 census, Mary (age 22), was enumerated with her father and her younger siblings in Albemarle, Virginia, United States.[1]
