Biography

Samuel Hart was born in Farmington, Connecticut, on 20 January 1737/8, recorded as the son of Lt. Samuel Hart and Mary Hart. [1] Some secondary sources give the date of his birth as the following day, 21 January.[2][3] He was born in the part of Farmington that is now the Kensington section of the town of Berlin.

His parents were Lt. Samuel Hart and Mary (Hooker) Hart, who had married in Farmington on 25 December 1723.[1]

21 August 1812[2]

Marriages

First, 10 October 1757, Rebecca Norton, daughter of Charles and Rebecca (Munson) Norton.[4]
Second, 4 October 1770, Lydia Hinsdale, daughter of Captain John and Elizabeth (Cole) Hinsdale.[4][3]

Children of the first marriage, as listed by Andrews in the Hart genealogy (page 56), were:

  1. Rebecca, born Jan. 30th, 1760, married Wm. Cook, of Danbury.
  2. Samuel, born May 17th, 1761, married, April 8th, 1791, Mary Wilcox.
  3. Charlotte, born Oct. 17th, 1762, married, Dec. 2d, 1784, Orrin Lee.
  4. Asahel, born May 6th, 1764, married, Sept. 23d, 1790, Abigail Cowles.
  5. Anna, born Feb. 16th, 1766, died of consumption, March 25th, 1784, aged 18 years.
  6. Jesse, born Jan. 3d, 1768, married, Nov. 28th, 1792, Lucy Beckley.
  7. James, born March 5th, 1769, died April 12th, 1770-1

Children of the second marriage, from that same source, were:

  1. Mary, born Sept. 23d, 1771, married John Lee.
  2. John, born Jan. 23d, 1773, died Sept. 13th, 1816, aged 44 years.
  3. James, born Dec. 26th, 1774, died Dec. 25th, 1796, at Staunton, Delaware, aged 22 years.
  4. Theodore, born Aug. 30th, 1776, died Nov. 1st, 1815, at Petersburg, Va., aged 39 years.
  5. Lydia, born Sept. 18th, 1778, married Elisha Treat.
  6. Betsey, born Sept. 21st, 1781, at the age of 11 years.
  7. Huldah, born July 12th, 1783, died Jan. 31st, 1784.
  8. Nancy, born March 8th, 1785, married Joshua Simmons.
  9. Emma, born Feb. 23d, 1787, married in 1812[5] to John Willard, M.D.
  10. Almira, born July 13th, 1793, married, Oct. 5th, 1817, Simeon Lincoln; second, John Phelps.

Research Notes

Note added here, apparently related to some other Samuel Hart:
Capt. Samuel Hart was a member of the Connecticut State Legislature in 1855, and was for many years the town clerk and treasurer of Cromwell, Connecticut.
