Robert Hart's father came to South Africa with the Argyllshire Highlanders in 1798 when he was 18 years of age. He left the army and became Superintendent of the Government Farm at Somerset East. In 1816 he was granted land, and he moved to 'Glen Avon' in 1822.
On 28 Oct 1855 he was witness at the baptism of his grandson Robert Hart Neser by the Graaff-Reinet DRC.
