Joseph Hart was listed with his wife and children among the survivors of the brig named Despatch that ran aground off the coast of Isle aux Morts, Newfoundland, on July 10, 1828. The survivors listed were taken to Halifax, Nova Scotia, aboard the HMS Tyne. The list notes that he lost two sons in the wreck.
