Note: Solomon Harter, retired farmer, Sec. 12; P.O. New Madison; one of the old settlers of Darke County; he was born in Virginia Feb 3, 1808; is the son of Francis Harter, who came to Darke County at an early day, bringing eight sons with him, all but one of whom became residents of Darke County; Solomon was about 8 years old when they came, and was reared in the wilderness, assisting in clearing and improving the farm. July 4, 1830, he was married to Margaret Ullman, who also belonged to a pioneer family; she was born Aug. 15, 1808; about two years after their mariage, they settled on the farm where he has since resided; her death occured July 17, 1862; they had five children, only two of whom are living - Elam, who resides in Butler Township; and M.K., who lives on and farms his father's place, his father living with him. Mr. Harter has been quite feeble for some time, but has had the satisfaction of seeing the wilderness subdued and fine farms with substantial improvements take the place of the forest which once covered the face of this now fertile region.
