Note: Aaron Harter (1845-1932) The Stanwood News - March 10, 1932 Taps Sounded for Civil War Veteran -- Last rites for Aaron Harter, aged 86 years, were held Saturday afternoon, March 5, at 2 p.m. in the C. J. Gunderson Sons Funeral chapel in East Stanwood, with Rev. S. J. N. Ylvisaker officiating. The Frank J. Hancock Post, American Legion were represented at the services and added the military touch. The pallbearere were S. S. Floe, L. M. Amundson, Ben Peterson, Elmer Ramberget, Ernest Yngve, John McGinnis of the Post. During the services several vocal numbers were rendered by Mrs. A. S. Anderson and Mrs. Anna Weinman. At the grave, where Mr. Harter was laid to rest in the Anderson cemetery, the firing squad of the Post: George Hancock, Chas. Simonson, Nels Anderson, Harold Knudson, Ben Gyes, Orvie Ronnie and Edward Goodridge, with Arnt Sagen bugler and Frank Obenhoffer, flag bearers, fired the military salute and sounded taps for the departed. The members were also present at the obsequies. Mr. Harter passed away March 2, at his home in Florence, after a lingering illness. He was born in Wabash County, Indiana, April 14, 1845. In 1851, with his parents and their family, he moved to Jefferson county, Iowa, where the family of nine children were reared. Mr. Harter enlisted with Company C., Regulars, 155 of the Union Army, February 14, 1865, serving in the Civil war until he was mustered out August 29, 1865. He returned to his home in Glaco [Glasgow] Iowa, April 1867. Shortly afterwards, accompanied by his brother-in-law, George Crane, he drove across the plains with a mule team to Walla Walla (Washington state), where they stayed until 1868, going from there to Montana, where he settled in a mining district and encountered considerable trouble from Indians who surrounded the district. After a residence of twelve years there he returned to Glasco [Glasgow]on a visit and remained for seven years. His next move was to Kansas, where he and his brother Caleb, operated a store for eight years, going from there to Seattle. In 1889 he came to Port Susan, now known as Warm Beach and settled on the farm now owned by C. D. Martin. When the Yukon gold rush was on, Mr. Harter joined the great throng going to Alaska in search of gold and spent a few years there before returning to his home in Port Susa. He married Mrs. Marie Urick January 14, 1907. Mr. and Mrs. Harter moved to their present home in Florence, where Mrs. Harter passed away in 1915. Note: The last sentence puzzles me because Marie was still alive according to the 1930 census of Florence, Snohomish, Washington. DMP.[5][6][7][8]
