Henry Harter's Death. Henry F. Harter was born April 14, 1840 and died December 28, 1906 aged 66 years 8 months and 14 days. When a boy he went to Hancock county Illinois with his parents Joseph and Susanah Harter in 1849, where he lived and grew to manhood. He was one of the nine brothers and three sisters. And out of the twelve brothers and sisters only five brothers and one sister survive. George M. of Enid Oklahoma, J.B. of Table Rock Nebraska, H.L of Omaha Nebraska, Dr. G.F. of Stronghurst Illinois, L.D. of Walter Oklahoma and mrs. E.V. Kauffman of Sycamore Mineral Springs Brown County Kansas. His brothers George and Joseph and Mrs. Kauffman were present at his death. He came to the Springs as a last resort. Having been sick for some time and realizing his condition he wanted to be brought to the Springs as he always before got relief from the water and baths. But the dreaded Brights disease, the main cause of his death had done its work. Tender and loving hands of his friends and family could do was of no avail. He was conconcious almost to the last. Through all his sickness and suffering he bore up manfull and was never heard to complain. Anyone meeting him at any time could not realize that he was in the misery and pain he was, as he was always bright and cheerful and had a pleasant word and smile for all he met. While Henry was not a professor member of any church or society what ever I doubt if there ever lived a more honest, upright man in any community. He of course had his misgivings as well as others but they I believe were over come by the good virtues contained in that warm heart of his. And I believing as we do that all the good tender qualities that go to make up our good character are not shown in pretentions -- but one made manifest and shown by the good acts we perform and practice. Mr. Harter was married to Miss Fannie Burner, daughter of the late Isaac and Jane Burner of Hancock county Illinois. To this union was born seven children: H.F. who is a merchant in Ponka City Oklahoma, Carl who is a dentist at Quenomo Kansas, Earl who is in the real estate business in Oklahoma City, Myrtle who is now Mrs. O. C. Blaner of Bern Kansas and Lillian who has been clerking for H.C. & C.S. Hains of Sabetha, and stayed with her parents. Pearly and Freddie having died some years ago. The wife and two daughters, Mrs. Kauffman a sister and George a brother were with him during his entire sickness at the Springs. And now all we can do is to bear the loss the best we can, believing in the words of the Savior who says "I will do all my pleasure," while we being poor helpless creatures can only say thy will not mine be done. May the good Lord take care of the widow and children. and teach them that in themselves they can do nothing. They must look to the Savior for consolation.
Farewell dear father, fare thee well.
Death twanged his fearful blow.
The arrow sped, thou wast the mark.
It's poison hath laid the low.
Sore was the grief to see thee laid.
Beneath the damp cold sod.
But sweet the solace for me to know.
Thy soul has gone to God.
Methinks I see thee near the throne.
Arrayed in dazzling white.
Singing Allelujahs to the Lamb.
In all the spheres of light.
E.V. Kauffman.[1][2]
