Mary Hartley, born 29 Jan 1770, died 11 Nov 1832, married to Joseph Townsend, son of Stephen Townsend, married 2nd on 9 Dec 1818 to Nehemiah Matson. Mary Hartley was born in Solebury Twp, Bucks County. On 11 Mar 1789 she married Joseph Townsend at Buckingham Meeting. He was born 1764 in Solebury. From Bucks County they moved to Hunterdon, NJ and then in 1813 they moved to Belmont County OH and in 1814 they moved to Short Creek, Harrison County, OH. Joseph died on 10 Feb 1817 in Harrison County where he was shot accidentally . . .

Townsend Newsletter (Fall 1990), pg 1.I-4: Joseph Townsend was b ca 1764, Bucks Co, Pa. He was a farmer and married March 11, 1789, Mary Hartley, dau of Benjamin and Elizabeth (Simcock) Hartley. They removed to Ohio about 1812 and Joseph was accidentally shot on Dec 11, 1816 at Short Creek Twp, Harrison Co, OH.

Whereas Joseph Townsend of the Township of Solebury of the County of Bucks in the State of Pennsylvania son of Stephen Townsend and Mary Hartley Daughter of Benjamin Hartley of the same place having declared their intentions of Marriage with each other before several Monthly Meetings of the people called Quakers held in Buckingham according to the good Order used among them and having the consent of Parents and Relations concerned their same proposals were allowed by the said Meeting.

Now these are to certify to all whom it may concern that for the full accomplishment of their said intentions the 11th Day of the 3rd Month in the year of our Lord 1789 they, the said Joseph Townsend & Mary Hartley appeared at a public meeting of the said people held at Buckingham aforesaid and the said Joseph Townsend taking the said Mary Hartley by the hand, did in a solemn manner openly declare he took her to be his Wife, promising with Divine Assistance to be unto her a loving and faithful Husband until death should separate them, and then there in the same assembly the said Mary Hartley did in like manner declare she took the said Joseph Townsend to be her husband, promising with Divine Assistance to be unto him a loving and faithful Wife until Death should separate them.

And moreover the said Joseph Townsend and Mary Hartley (she according to the custom of Marriage) assuming the name of her husband as a further confirmation thereby did then and there to these Present set their Hands: And we who's names are hereunder also subscribe being present as the Solemnization of the said Marriage and subscriptions have as witnesses thereunto set our hands the day and year above written.
