Letter to my mother, Christina Germaine Harvey Thon Lewis written by Mrs.Suries (?), RFD #1, Dysart Pennsylvania, USA. 8/30/1937, the second wife of Thomas Thon:
Dear Christine,
Your ever welcome letter received this morning and thank you very kindly. It was very likely Tom's 4th wife you met a few years ago. As he and I have not lived together for close to 15 years. He married again in 1923/24 to a Helen Wilson. She later divorced him. They had two boys and for the past 7-8 years he has been living with or has been married to a Cabner girl. She was born and raised at the foot of Norths Hill. You are likely familiar with this territory. Quite a collection as far as wives go.
#1 Christine Harvey
#2. Edna Boone
#3 Helen Wilson
#4 Red Cabner.
Well, the first three have not faired so badly after all. As for yourself, you must have had a lot of grit to be admitted into the professional world and I have a little business and am very well respected in this community. #3, Helen Wilson is married to an interior decorator by the name of Mayhew. She lives in Salem, Ohio, USA. She also has one child by her second marriage - that makes her 3 boys. They always stop to visit us when they come in. My husband neither drinks nor uses tobacco and is only 3 years my senior. We have a Service Station and Beer Garden. Not the dancing road house kind. We have all very nice people. We have one boy five years old. A very bright little fellow. And blonde as can be. I have forgotten the most important part. The Bishop granted dispensation on the strength of the return receipt of my letter to you. We were married over again August 6th and I received my First Holy Communion August 5th. Get confirmed sometime next month. And we are very VERY Happy. And I'm very VERY Happy that you have found happiness for if you have had the same experiences that I have, you are well deserving of it.
Well, I must close. Thanking you again. And hoping to see you some time. I shall remain an ever faithful friend, and ready to help you at any time as you have helped me. If you need it. And it is in my power.
Respectfully
Mrs. Edna Suries (?)
P.S. My penmanship is not as beautiful as yours but I hope you can read it. I love nice writing.[Riddell 1.FTW]
Per MJC: Edith and my father were very closed-mouthed about it. My mother actually took care of Edith when she was hospitalized. My mother and Edith were very friendly. My mother met my father when he was in the hospital with two broken legs, I think about 1925. They didn't marry until 1934 and I was born in 1936.
DEATH: My father had a stroke when I was 2 and although he was still able to walk, it affected his speech. My mother took care of him for the rest of his life and he died at age 92. I guess she was just worn out because she died from what we think was a stroke. I had been Christmas shopping and stopped to pick her up to come up to the house for dinner. My youngest son was only a month old and she was holding him in the car when she suddenly went limp. It was difficult but at least I know she didn't suffer.
