Biography

Mary Harvey was born to Peter Harvey (1838-1900) and Mary (Ashcroft) Harvey (1839-1912) on September 13, 1860 in the Maryhill district of Glasgow, Scotland, according to the statutory record of her birth, reported by her father. [1] Some sources record Mary as having been born about a month earlier in Mearns, Renfrewshire, Scotland. (The discrepancy may be due to her father's job sometimes taking him away from the family, and he possibly reporting the birth late where he was living.)

In 1861, Mary lived with her mother at the home of her paternal grandparents in Mearns. [2] In 1871, Mary's father was back in the home. The family lived at White Craig Quarry, Eastwood, Renfrewshire, Scotland. [3]

Mary migrated to New York at some time in the late 1870s. She moved on to Pennsylvania, where she married William Gray on January 6, 1881 at St. Joachim RC Church in the Frankford district of Philadelphia. [4] They went back to Scotland where Mary gave birth to Alexander Joseph Gray (1883-1942). [5] Mary and William arrived back in Philadelphia about 1884. There, Mary gave birth to Peter George Gray (1885-) and Catherine (Gray) Brawley. In 1891, Mary and her family returned to Scotland for the sake of her health. [6] [7] They had two more children: Ann (Gray) Burke (1892-1954) and Edith Mary (Gray) Stillger (1899-1946).

The family lived in Maryhill through two census cycles. [8] [9] In 1919, Mary applied for a US passport in order to join her husband William in the US. [7] She made the Oath of Allegiance for Naturalization on 5 Jul 1919 at the US Consulate in Glasgow. Mary arrived in New York on 30 August 1919.

In 1920, Mary and her family were living at 50 Ward Avenue in Trenton, New Jersey, USA. [10] Mary was widowed in 1928. She continued to live around family in the Trenton area until her death on 13 August 1947 at a nursing home in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. [11] She is buried at St Mary Cemetery, Trenton.
