Biography

Mark Haskell was baptized 6 or 8 April 1621 at Charlton Musgrove, Somerset, England.[1][2][3] He was the son of William Haskell and Elinor Foule,

On 26 April 1635, at age 14, Mark was apprenticed by the Overseers of the Poor for Charlton Musgrove to John Whiting, a broadweaver of Shepton Mallet, Somerset, for a period of nine years. The overseers were probably acting "in loco parentis" rather than alleviating a poverty case.[4] See [#Research_Notes|Research Notes]].

Mark emigrated to America after 1644, when his apprenticeship ended, and before 30 September 1652, when "Marke Hoscall of Salem" was fined by the Salem Court for wearing "broad lace."[5] At the time the laws of Salem stated that "no person whose estate did not exceed £200 should wear any great boots, gold or silver, lace, buttons, or silk hood, ribbons, or scarves under penalty of 10s."[6] He settled in the Basse River section of Salem, Massachusetts and was a mariner by trade.[citation needed] His name is not found much in written records, perhaps because he was often at sea.

Mark married Hannah (Woodbury) Patch,[7][8]the widow of James Patch, between 1 : 9 : 1658 [1 November 1658] (date Patch will proved in court)[9] and 5 June 1663 (she is "Hannah Haskell" in her father's will).[10]

Mark Haskell died intestate before 30 March 1669 (court ordered administration) [11][12] and probably before 16:11:1668 [16 January 1668/9] (date estate debts were tallied).[13][14][8] From the 30 March 1669 court record,[15]

Marke Hascall dying intestate, court granted administration of the estate to Hanah Hascall, widow of Marke, who brought in an inventory amounting to £370 8s. 3d. Court ordered to the two children left, Wm. and Marke, £200, the eldest to have a double portion, and the rest of the estate to the widow Hanah Hascall. Ordered also that Mr. Edmund Batter, Wm. Hascall, Hugh Woodbury and Nicholas Woodbury be overseers.

From the published account of his estate inventory,[16]

Family

Mark and Hannah had the following children:[6][17][18]

  1. William Haskell, died 11 August 1694; married 1688, Ruth West.
  2. Mark Haskell, died May 1734; married 1695/6, Charity (Gale) Pittman.

Research Notes

Immigration. Citing "Descendants of Mark Haskell," published in The Haskell Journal, Issue 42, vol.11 #4 (Winter 1996) pg.765," profile reports he was apprenticed at England in 1635 and "emigrated to America after 1644."

What are the records and analysis in support of this claim? His mother is presumed to have married at Engand to John Stone, who was known of Salem, Massachusetts Bay by at least 1636. In the late 1637 Salem division of marsh and meadow, John Stone was granted one acre, for family of seven.[19] This presumably includes John Stone, his two sons, wife Elinor, and John's Haskell stepchildren.[20]

Occupation. Biography reports he was a mariner. How do we know that?

Death. Profile reports he was a mariner, and his death is not recorded in either the Salem or Beverly vital records. How do we know he died at Massachusetts Bay?

Daughter-in-Law. Among the estate debts is mention of amounts owed to his daughter-in-law. It is possible either he had another son who died before him without issue, or his wife's son from her previous marriage, or, as was common at the time, daughter-in-law could have referred to a step-daughter. Hannah had one son and two daughters by her first husband James Patch.[6]

Of Ipswich? A footnote in Mary Walton Ferris' 1931 account of the William Woodbury family reads, "Mark Haskell, called of Ipswich, was probably the younger brother of William Haskell." For the association as William's brother, author cited ""Records and Files ... VI, 315," and "VI, 122, Essex Institute Historical Collections, XXXII, 134-7," and refers to "Dawes Gates Ancestral Lines, Vol. I."[21]

New England Marriages prior to 1700. He is "Mark Haskel (?1621-1669?), she is Hannah (Woodbury) [Patch], works consulted as "Dawes-Gates 2:833[-34]; Reg. 71:168, 170, 100:72; Warren (,5) 60; EIHC 1:150; White-Haskell 41."[22]

Haskell Journal. The Haskell Journal is "the official newletter of the Haskell Family Association"; issues are said available to dues-paying subscribers from a "Members only" section of the association website and FamilyHistory Libraries [Fiche 6047234 and Film 1878127, Item 4 (DGS 9064116)].

What specific historical references are provided showing that sons Mark and William Haskel were born to wife Hannah (Woodbury) (Patch) Haskell?

The article just published in NEHGR reports about children born to Hannah and her first husband, and it reports her second marriage, but does not list children born of that marriage. See David Curtis Dearborn and John Bradley Arthaud, "William<small>1</small> Woodbury of Salem and Beverly, Massachusetts," New England Historical and Genealogical Register, 175:208.

Court record of the father's probate (Ipswich Quarterly Court, held at Ipswich 30 March 1669) refers to "children left" but gives no indication these sons were minors. (It doesn't say their legacies should be paid at marriage or at reaching age 21, etc.) See George Francis Dow, Records and Files of the Quarterly Courts of Essex County, Massachusetts, 9 vols. (Salem, Mass.: Essex Institute, 1911–1989), 4:122; digital images, Hathi Trust.

Mark Haskell was Hannah's second husband. Her first husband, James Patch, died 10 August 1658--so if there were children born to Hannah, they could not have been older than 11 at the time of Mark's death.

WikiTree reports son Mark Haskell born 1665, and the same for son William Haskell, suggesting both were age 4 or 5 at the time their father died. (The court record indicates one was older, "the eldest to have a double portion.")

Many of the claims in the biography cite articles in the Haskell Journal, but do not mention historical records referenced by those articles. Assuming the articles indeed reference historical records, it would be helpful if those were made part of the source record. (For example, "Citing ABC ... " so and so author, such and such article, Haskell Journal ....) Without including the historical references, what may be well documented material becomes just another secondary source.

There are two online databases cited. One, "Haskell Family Database" seems no longer functional. The other, "Haskell Family in North America" seems to generally cite different issues of the Haskell Journal without referencing the underlying historical records.

What have I missed?--Gene

Edited to add: Have looked over some of the entries referred to as "Mark Haskell" or "William Haskell" in Melinde Lutz Sanborn, Ages from the Court Records, 1636-1700. At least those I looked at did not seem to be about Mark's children.

Haskell-914 and Haskell-412 appear to represent the same person because: Clearly duplicate. Death date is sourced.

Mark Haskell-412, b. before 1621, should probably be detached as son from Roger Haskell-254 and merged with Roger's brother, Mark Haskell-540

Haskell-914 Unmerged match

Not quite enough information to tell whether these 2 represent the same person, or not. Please add details and citations to identify. Thanks!
