Biography

Matthias was "probably" a son of Thomas Hatfield and Anna (Hamden) Cox.

Thomas was an English religious dissenter, born in 1602 at Leiden, Gelderland.[1][2]

It is likely Matthias was born ca 1640, but birthplace is entirely speculative. Theories exist for England, Germany, and Dutch origins. Finding a ship manifest may help in this endeavor.

Dr. John Winthrop, Jr. recorded in his medical journal in 1664 that Matthias was "of Dansick:"[3]
Hetfeild, Mathias a high dutchman of Dantsick now living at New Haven 1664.[4]
Some interpret this as Danzig, Poland, but the inclusion of the phrase, "high dutchman," makes it more likely he meant Dansk or Dutch.

Mathias acquired property in Elizabethtown, NJ by 1666, among the first Elizabethtown Associates (freeholders). He took an oath of loyalty to the Crown there in Feb. 1665/6. Along with most the Associates, he also swore allegiance to the Dutch when they retook New Jersey and the rest of the former New Netherlands in 1673. The English reclaimed the colony by treaty in 1674. The reinstated governor accused the Associates of "treason" for their collaboration, but no charges were brought.[5]

Immigration

The date and ship of Matthias' immigration are not known, but he took the Oath of Fidelity on 1 May 1660 at New Haven Colony.[6] Matthias was also in New Haven in 1664; this from the medical journal of Dr. John Winthrop.[4]

Marriage and Children

Matthias was married on 26 August 1664 at New Haven Colony to Mariken "Maria" (Melyn) Paradijs (bpt 29 Mar 1637 at Nieuwe Kerk, Amsterdam), daughter of Cornelis Melyn, and widow of Claes Allertsen Paradijs.[6] the marriage record read, "Matthias Hitfield and mariah Pardie were married by Mr. Wm Jones August 25, 1664."[7][8] Note: This date differs from the one in New Netherland Connections. Theirs was a double wedding; Maria's sister, Susanah, was married to John Winans at the same time.[6] Baptisms of their first three children took place in the New York City Dutch Church.[6]

Children of Matthias and Maria:[6]

  1. Cornelius Hatfield bpt 9 June 1669
  2. Abraham Hatfield bpt 8 June 1670
  3. Rachel Hatfield bpt 3 October 1674
  4. Elizabeth Hatfield b c. 1675
  5. Mary Hatfield b btwn 1672 and 1676
  6. Isaac Hatfield b btwn 1672 and 1676

Death and Legacy

Matthias died on December 13, 1687 at Elizabethtown, Essex, Colony of New Jersey.[9]

Was Thomas born in England? I can’t access the paid source. Is there another source for his birth? His profile says he was born in England in 1602 and went to Leiden by 1626.

The Bristol article is on Archive.org. Also the Dexter work which they cite. Dexter says Thomas married in Leyden which indicates that his son(s) were born there. But Mathias's parentage by Thomas appears speculative, and/or family tradition via Edwin and Abraham.

It looks like Marsh-3537 is supposed to be the wife of Matthias' son Abraham, http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=57095503 so I'm going to detach her to merge her with the daughter-in-law.

Hatfield-286 and Hatfield.-3 appear to represent the same person because: dates are the same, birthplace is unsourced on one profile

The marriage date must be wrong; he died in 1687, married in 1694, offspring born 1665 to 1675. How about married 1664?
