Biography

When David Hatfield was born in 1723, his father, Abraham, was 28 and his mother, Margaret, was 30. He married Susanna Clark in 1746 in Essex, New Jersey. They had 11 children in 18 years. He died in September 1801 having lived a long life of 78 years, and was buried in Rahway, New Jersey. [1]

The following is a transcription of the will of my 6th great grandfather, David Hetfield, Sr., obtained in Trenton, NJ on 19 Sept 2016:

The Last Will and Testament of David Hetfield, Sr.

Inasmuch as it is appointed for all men once to Die, and the Times when very uncertain, I David Hetfield of the Borough of Elizabeth County of Essex and State of New Jersey being in [health?], and of sound and disposing mind and memory, blessed be the name of The Lord for the same, therefore do this Sixth day of June in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight hundred and One, make and publish [unclear words]and for my Last Will and Testament, in manner and for the following.

Imprimus. I do order in the first place that all my Funeral Expences [sic] be fully paid out of my personal Estate, by my Executors herein after named.

Item I do give and bequeath unto Mary and Anna Wood, Daughters of James and Margaret Wood, the Sum of Five pounds each, to be [unclear] out of my personal Estate, by my Executors and to be put out on Interest by my [last line unclear]…and [unclear] to the said Mary Wood & Anna Wood with all the Interest arising there on, as they each arrive to the age of Eighteen years.

Item I do give and bequeath unto my Grand Daughters Anna, Sarah and Susanna Scudder, Daughters of John and Susanna Scudder, the like Sum of Five pounds (Currant [sic] lawful money of the State of New York) a piece, to be levied out of my moveable Estates by my Executors, the same to be put out on Interest by my Executors in One year after my Decease, and paid to my said Granddaughters Anna, Sarah and Susanna Scudder, with all the Interest arising there on when they severally arrive to the Age of Eighteen years.

Item I do give and bequeath unto my Son David Hetfield all my Wearing Apparel.

Item After the payment of all my just Debts, Funeral Expences [sic] and the several Legacies herein bequeath’d [sic] are all fully paid out of my personal Estates, all the overpluss [sic] remaining of the same, I do give and bequeath unto my Son David Hetfield.

Lastly I do nominate [unclear word] and appoint my Son David Hetfield and James H. Clark Executors of this my last Will and Testament.

In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and Seal this day and year first above Written.

Sign’d, Seal’d Publish’d and declar’d [all sic] by the said David Hetfield [unclear] for his last Will and Testament in the presence of [unclear] the Subscribers.

Hatfield-1768 and Hatfield-1440 appear to represent the same person because: David Hatfield is my 6th great-grandfather. I have sourced his information through "The Descendants of Matthias Hatfield" by Abraham Hatfield published in 1954 by the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society.
