Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Ephraim Hatfield Sr was a Virginia colonist.

Ephraim was the son of Joseph Hatfield (1740-1832) and Elizabeth "Deliz" Vance (1744-1778).

Date of Birth also given as 1764 or 1765. Place of Birth also given as Russell County, Virginia, which was created from Washington County in 1786, after Ephraim was born.

Ephraim Hatfield first appears in the Russell County, Virginia, tax lists in 1788 indicating he was born on or before 1767. His brother, Joseph Hatfield, Jr., appears on the Russell County tax lists for the first time in 1791 at age 21, thus he was born by ca. 1770.

Marriage

Ephraim's first wife was Mary "Polly" Smith (1754-1800).

The Rev. Musick (page 37) states that Ephraim's first wife was Mary Goff who died about 1790, and in a footnote (page 41) states: "Some folks believe Ephraim Hatfield's first wife was Mary Smith." The following land transactions confirm that supposition. Ericus Smith and his wife Joanna; Andrew Smith and his wife Rachel; Joseph Hatfield and his wife Rachel; Ephraim Hatfield and his wife Mary; parties of the first part and all of Russell County, Virginia, sold to Ely Smith for 100 pounds some 94 acres of land in New Garden township, Russell County, Virginia, as recorded in the August Court, 1797 (in Russell County Deed Book 2, page 336). Joseph and Ephraim Hatfield later sold 106 acres adjoining the earlier 94 acre tract, to Ericus Smith, Jr. All the parties mentioned must have been heirs of Ericus Smith, Sr.

Ephraim married his second wife, Anna McKinney (Musick) Bundy, on 29 Nov 1830. His son-in-law, a Pike County, Kentucky, justice of the peace officiated. By that date, Eph and Anna had been together more than 30 years, They apparently "took up" together around 1795, about three years after Anna's first husband, David Musick, was killed by Shawnee Indians. The status of Anna's second husband, Mr. (Nathaniel?) Bundy, is unclear.

The 1830 and 1840 Census are not conclusive that they belong to this profile. Those two sources can easily belong to Hatfield-316, as he was in Pike County, Kentucky near that time too.
