George Washington Hatfield was born on December 27, 1838, in Carleton, New Brunswick, Canada, his father, James, was 31 and his mother, Jane, was 31. He married Emily C Holmes Hatfield on February 14, 1863, in Houlton, Maine. They had nine children in 20 years. He died on March 9, 1910, in his hometown at the age of 71, and was buried there.
Son of James Lent Abraham Hatfield and Jane Shaw.
Unsuccessful at the shoemaking trade, he bought his fathers store and ran it as G. W. Hatfield and Son.
He also operated a ferry from Simonds to Peel, which ran until 1940.
