Biography

Phebe was born on November 23, 1845 (but see "Problems in Sources" section below) in Crawford County, Indiana. She was the daughter of Henry Hatfield and Mary Newton.

She married Union soldier James Wilbur Trusty on September 18, 1864 in Crawford County. The couple had at least 7 children together. James died in 1898.

She passed away on March 22, 1920 in Poplar Bluff Township (not within Poplar Bluff city limits), Butler County, Missouri, as a result of chronic nephritis. She had moved to Missouri in the 1910s and lived with her son, George.

Problem(s) in Source(s)

1) Phebe's death certificate gives her birthdate as November 23, 1843. The year is clearly an error, as it disagrees with her age in the census enumerations of 1850, 1860, 1880, and 1910 by 2 years (1870 and 1900 by 3 years), and would make her only about 3-4 months younger than her older brother John W. Hatfield. Her tombstone in Indiana (evidently not used for her burial after she moved to Missouri) corroborates the November 23 birthday, but the birth year is not legible from the photo posted on FindaGrave. A November 23 birthday consistent with her census records would indicate her birth year as 1845. I'm listing that as her exact birthdate as a result, but further corroboration would be appreciated, if found.

2) FindaGrave has a profile, as of the time of this writing, which gives her burial location as Rowland-Potter Cemetery in Crawford County, Indiana, along with a monument photo. She does have a monument there (evidently placed before her death and presumably before she moved to Missouri), but her death certificate states that she was buried on March 23, 1920 in Black Creek Cemetery in Butler County, Missouri.
