Lucinda was born in 1861. She is the daughter of Mark Hatley and Margaret Carter. She passed away in 1931.
According to family history Lucinda left Alonce Mitchell because of the activities that he was involved in at the time. Supposedly, she told him that she did not want him riding on anymore raids on Mexican families and other so called "undesirables". One morning he came home smelling like smoke after being gone all night. He would not tell her why. She later found out that a Mexican family's home had been burned by Range Riders. This was what made her decided to leave. She took her children and went to her parents home. Her daughter, Beulah Irene, was left with her mother to raise.
Lucinda went to work on a ranch in the area doing cooking for the ranch hands. There she met a man named James Porter Slay. He was a merchant that sold guns and supplies to the local ranchers. They married and left with her son Orestes for Palo Pinto Co., TX. I do not have any legal proof the marriage of Lucinda and James other than a date that was in my grandmother's bible of 1888 Lampasas Co., TX. [1]
