Biography

Johannes Haupt was born on 27 August 1734 in Windesheim, Palatinate [Germany], a son of Johann Nicolaus Haupt and Anna Elisabeth Geiß.

He arrived in Philadelphia on the ship Edinburgh, where he signed the declaration of oath on 30 September 1754, together with his cousin, Johann Samuel Haupt, and his elder brother, Johann Nicolaus Haupt.

In America, he was known as John Haupt (also spelled John Houpt).

He probably settled originally in upper Philadelphia County (present-day Montgomery County), Pennsylvania, near his Haupt cousins who had arrived previously from Windesheim.

Removed to Rockhill Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania by 1761.

Removed to Nockamixon Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania by 1767.

Removed to Williams Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania by 1771.

Was present in Lower Saucon Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania in 1772.

Removed to Sussex County (present-day Warren County), New Jersey by 1773.

Farmer with 140 acres, 2 horses and 2 cows in Weisenberg Township, Northampton County (present-day Lehigh County), Pennsylvania in 1786, when John Judy (Tschudi) was indicted for stealing a black mare from his field.

Removed to Plainfield Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania by 1810.

He married (1) Anna Catharina Sauer in 1758, and (2) Anna Ottilia Grass, the widow of Martin Engel, before 1810.

He and his first wife were the parents of eight children.

John Haupt died on 7 June 1814 in Bushkill Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania at the age of "80 years less 2 months and 2 weeks".

His sister Catharine (Maria Catharina Haupt) and brother Nicholas (Johann Nicolaus Haupt) also emigrated to Pennsylvania from Windesheim.
