Biography

Margaret's father John Haven lived next to John's father Jacob Shell on the New River. Margaret's mother Mary's family were supposedly Hendersons. Based on her marriage date only, Margaret was probably born by 1770 if she wed no earlier than the age of 16.

After marrying, she and John Shell apparently lived for awhile on or near their fathers' land on the the Horshoe Bend. Later they moved across the river and bought land in what is now Pulaski County, VA.

After John died, Margaret left the area with all her family about 1811 to Miami County, OH. She and her children apparently squatted on land in Elizabeth township until Margaret was able to purchase 120 acres in 1816.

Margaret was listed as the head of household in 1820. In her home were probably her unmarried daughter Margaret 'Peggy', her two younger sons Henry and Isaac(who had not yet married), and another male indicated as >45 of unknown provenance. There is no know record of her remarrying.

She was listed as a property owner in the 1821 Miami County tax list but died sometime that year. She was about 50-55 years old. Her burial place is unknown, but is probably somewhere in an Elizabeth township cemetery.

The first indenture of her estate was disbursed on 25 Dec 1821, disbursing equally to her surviving children, who, except for Peggy, Henry, and Isaac where living elsewhere in Miami County. A second was sent in February 1822 to two sons living in Wayne County, IN. The Elizabeth township land was deeded to the two youngest sons Henry and Isaac, with the proviso they pay $800 pro rata to the other surviving siblings.

There is no mention of daughter Catherine 'Caty'(from John's will of 1808), so she apparently had died by Dec 1821, or before the move to Ohio in 1811.
