Biography

George Havens, son of William and Dionis Havens, was born in 1653 in the colony of Rhode Island, New England. He married Eleanor Thurston, daughter of Edward and Elizabeth (Mott) Thurston in 1674. He died on Feb. 21, 1706 and was buried at the Old Cemetery, New London, Connecticut Colony, New England.[1] At the time of his death, George Havens was the owner of a 1000 acre estate at Shelter Island, New York and was a resident at that estate, however as his tombstone is found in New London, Connecticut, it seems likely that he died there, perhaps during a trip to gather provisions at this nearest supply center.

George was a freeman 1680 and on 6 September 1687 he is cited on Gov. Andros' tax roll at Rochester, (Kingstown) Rhode Island owing a “pole” (poll) tax of 1 s, and a property tax of 4s 3d, which places him as an adult resident and as a property landholder in Kingstown, RI on this date. [2] This tax roll identifies a sum total of 136 heads of house living in the roughly 22.5 square mile area associated with Kingstown, RI on this date in 1687; one consequence of this sparse population is that he would have been well acquainted with many, if not all, of the individuals identified on this list. The list is a defacto definition of the people who were available to be his friends, neighbors, and allies; it would be essential to cultivate strong working relationships with these neighbors in order to survive on this frontier landscape. This cross reference tool provides hot links to peruse most of the 136 Wikitree families identified in this tax roll; families who were very frequently interconnected, or became interconnected, by marriage over the course of their lives and throughout the ensuing generations, further binding a network of neighbors into extended families. [3] He was a constable at Kingsgown on July 15, 1695, but in 1696, he sold his Rhode Island farms on Boston Neck, a peninsula to the west of Conanicut Island and south of North Kingstown, and subsequently purchased a 1000 acre Shelter Island, NY farm from Nathaniel Sylvester II about 1698 and is documented to have been living on Shelter Island in 1701. The following year sold his farm near E. Greenwich, Rhode Island to Henry Tibbetts.

He was 53 when he died in 1706. He was buried in the New London, Connecticut, cemetery. He died intestate and letters of administration were issued February 11, 1706 to widow Eleanor.

George and Eleanor (Thurston) Havens had the following eight children:[1]
  1. George, married Mary
  2. Jonathan, born Feb. 22, 1681; married Hannah Brown, Jan. 1, 1706-1707
  3. William, died unmarried in 1746
  4. Abigail Havens
  5. John, married Sarah
  6. Content, married Cornelius Payne
  7. Patience, married Soper (Loper?)
  8. Desire, married Gardiner

It is entirely plausible that Desire had relocated with her brother to Kingstown, RI to serve as a nanny for his family. Henry Gardiner was only 19 at the time of the marriage, hence the marriage was almost certainly a shotgun wedding, and six months is fully ample time for romantic relationship to develop.}

If this is the right gravestone, why was he buried at New London, CT, if he never spent any time thier????

This George is from Portsmouth, Rhode Island Colony, & died on Shelter Island, NY. Asking because I'm looking for the F-GF of Jonathan Havens-2218 (1754-1809) who actually was born/died in New London, CT. Please reach out if you have any insight into this!

Havens-579 and Havens-66 appear to represent the same person because: Hi Valerie, I have fixed information on Havens-579 to match the source I have. There seems to be a slight debate on the date of death for George Havens, but both sources seem to agree more or less on Feb. 1706-1707.
Havens-579 and Havens-66 do not represent the same person because: with the limited information given on Havens-579, and the information giving not matching, I decline a merger at the time until more information is available.

Havens-579 and Havens-66 appear to represent the same person because: Same name & spouse. Working on merging others. I recommend using date/place of birth/death on Havens-66, since Havens-579 only source is an online family tree.
