Biography

Elizabeth Haviland's forefathers settled in New England in the 17th century, and she was a "birthright" Quaker — the first in her family to marry outside her faith. She died in 1887, when her son Willis was 11 years old. She possibly named her son after her half uncle-in-law Willis Hoag Haviland, with whom she lived after the death of her father in 1868 and before her marriage to Duane Carrier. Willis Hoag Haviland was the husband of her mother's half-sister Hannah Wing Haviland, her 1st cousin twice removed (both being descended from Roger Haviland & Elizabeth Hare), and her 2nd cousin twice removed (both being descended from David Hoag & Keziah Jenkins).

“R” could be for “Rogers,” her great grandmother’s family name. Since she was living with Willis Hoag Haviland in the 1870 Census and married to Duane Carrier in the 1880 Census, so she was married sometime between 1870 and 1880.
