Biography

Charles was a Friend (Quaker)

Charles HAVILAND b. 5 Dec 1800, bp. Hoosick Twp., Rensselaer Co., NY d. 13 Mar 1850, Raisin, Lenawee Co., MI occ. Farmer

He married Laura Smith, daughter of Daniel and Sena Smith, on 3d 11m 1825 [3 Nov 1825].[1]

Laura and Charles set up the first station on the "Underground Railroad" in Michigan, boldly in violation of the Fugitive Slave Law, helping escaped slaves flee to Canada where they would be free. It is not known how many slaves found freedom through this junction, but the numbers estimate from 40,000 to as high as 100,000. In 1837 Laura and Charles founded the Raisin Institute, one of the first schools in the nation to admit black children. source: Havilands.com

Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy Vol IV Ohio Mo EDIT 1831 Raisin, Lenawee, Michigan, USA Adrian Mounthy Meeting Adrian Mounthy Meeting was set off from Farmington monthly Meeing, New York, on the Mo. 28, 1831. All friends in southern Michigan belonged to this one monthly meeting until Raisin Monthly Meeting was set off from Adrian Monthly Meeting in 8th Mo. 1842. Raisin Preparative Meeting was a transplanted body of believers from Royalton, Niagara County, New York, who emigrated en masse to Michigan. Three of the leading families were those of Charles HAVILAND, Josuah BEAVERMAN, and Sylvanus WESTGATE. After belonging for all these years and realizing the distance and difficulty attending it, a delegation was appointed in 1868 to attend Ohio Yearly Meeting with the thought of attending themselves to this body. They were welcomed b the yearly Meeting and were joined to Ohio Yearly Meeting in 1869. The place of the monthly meeting was about three and a half miles from the city of Adrian in Adrian township, later known as Raisin Valley. In 1849 these Friends appointed a committee to solicit funds for the establistment of Friends School. The School was opened on 12th Mo. 10, 1850, and was incorporated under the name Raisin Valley Seminary. It continued in operation until 1908. (note from me, I wonder if Josuah BEAVERMAN is BOWERMAN. You'll find Joshua BOWERMAN Birth 20 August 1786 in Falmouth, Barnstable, Massachusetts Death 28 JUL 1843 in Raisin, Lenawee, Michigan on the same page 1830 Cencus for Royalton, Niagara, New York as Samuel and Ingerson Haviland. Samuel is the brother of famous Charles HAVILAND Birth 5 Dec 1800 in Hoosick, Rensselaer Co., New York Death 13 Mar 1845 in Raisin,Lenawee Co., Michigan already mentioned in above article. During thirty years of research, I've never met a Beaverman. All three families mentions had been Quakers for a long time.)
